The Texas Biomedical Research Institute, formerly known as the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, is an independent not-for-profit research institution located on a 200-acre campus near San Antonio, Texas. The organization has over 400 employees including a multidisciplinary team of approximately 85 doctoral-level scientists who lead more than 200 major research projects across the Department of Genetics; Department of Virology and Immunology; and Southwest National Primate Research Center, which houses the world\'s largest colony of baboons for biomedical research.
The Institute is home to the only privately owned biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) laboratory in the United States. The maximum containment lab allows for research on lethal pathogens for which there are no treatments or vaccines, including potential bio-terror agents and emerging diseases.
Texas Biomed has played a key role in development of vaccines, antibodies and antitoxins for deadly pathogens such as anthrax, botulinum neurotoxins, and Ebola; and developed invaluable animal models contributing to diverse public health research applications.
