SUMMARY:Leveraging Data Science Approaches to Address Environmental Health Challenges in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Environmental Health challenges in Africa are complex\, involving a broad range of exposures\, including ambient and indoor air pollution\, electronic waste\, heavy metals\, pesticides\, vector-borne pathogens\, and climate change\, and a large proportion of the disease burden in Africa is linked to environmental factors. This session will explore unique aspects and analytic challenges of the various types of environmental health data and will highlight recent data science approaches to characterizing hazardous exposures on the African continent\, connecting environmental exposures to health outcomes\, and reducing the risk of disease connected to the environment. \nModerator:\nGwen Collman\, Acting Deputy Director\, Associate Director for Extramural Research\, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences \nPanelists:\nKiros Berhane\, Professor and Chair\, Department of Biostatistics\, Mailman School of Public Health\, Columbia University \nCaradee Wright\, Senior Specialist Scientist\, Environment and Health Research Unit\, South African Medical Research Council \nEngineer Bainomugisha\, Associate Professor and Chair\, Department of Computer Science\, School of Computing & IT\, Makerere University \nTo participate in the discussion and session\, you must register for the DS-I Africa Virtual Forum in advance. All content will also be recorded and posted on this website after each event.

SUMMARY:Clearing the Path: Responding to Disasters During a Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is convening a diverse group of public-private partners to present\, Clearing the Path: Responding to Disasters During a Crisis\, a virtual discussion for National Preparedness Month\, on September 24\, 2020\, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. EST. \nWhen responding to natural disasters during a crisis\, such as the COVID-19 pandemic\, emergency responders\, hospitals\, and supply chains are working at capacity\, while the next hurricane\, wildfire\, or flood could be around the corner. For communities to adapt and respond to these compounding pressures\, they must understand how technologies can inform risk-based decision making in areas of neighborhood health monitoring\, supply chains\, evacuation planning\, crisis communications\, and information sharing among front-line responders. Innovation in predictive analytics\, modeling and simulation\, and mobility offer new solutions to tackle immediate challenges and prepare for emerging threats. \nTopics of this virtual discussion will include: \n\nUnderstanding how public-private partnerships are accelerating new solutions and business models to prepare for day-to-day emergencies and a national crisis.\nEducating community leaders on how new science and technology applications are enhancing resilience and protecting life-line systems and networks.\nWith increased frequency of new threats\, examining what new tools and policies are available to incentivize collaboration among government\, industry\, and foundations.\nWith communities investing in automated and digital technologies\, asking why this is important and how predictive data sets are changing the way we think about risk and preparedness.\n\nSpeakers include: \n\nDavid Maurstad\, Deputy Associate Administrator\, FEMA\n\n\nDuane Caneva\, Chief Medical Officer\, DHS Countering WMD Office\n\n\nTed Smith\, Ph.D.\, Wastewater Based Epidemiology\, Professor of Environmental Medicine\, University of Louisville and Advisor to Louisville Mayor\, Greg Fischer\n\n\nCatherine Cross\, Deputy Under Secretary\, DHS Science and Technology Directorate (S&T)\n\n\nDavid Corman\, Program Director\, Cyber-Physical Systems and Smart and Connected Communities\, National Science Foundation\n\n\nRichard Seline\, Executive Director\, Accelerate H2O\, Houston\, TX\n\n\nMichel Leonard\, Vice President and Senior Economist\, Insurance Information Institute\n\n\nModerator: David Alexander\, Director of Resilience Research and Partnerships\, DHS S&T\n\nTo register for the National Preparedness Month Virtual Discussion: Clearing the Path: Responding to Disasters During a Crisis\, please register here.
