SUMMARY:NIST Rapid Microbial Testing Methods Consortium Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The NIST-led Rapid Microbial Testing Methods (RMTM) Consortium is hosting the 4th annual workshop 11-12 April 2024 to update the community on RMTM Consortium efforts and to work on Consortium deliverables. \nOver the course of two days\, independent working sessions will be hosted\, with Day 1 open to the public and Day 2 for Consortium members only. \nThis open\, virtual workshop is free of charge. All interested parties are invited to Day 1\, including advanced therapy producers\, rapid microbial testing assay/instrument developers\, and cell reference material producers. \nNew members are being accepted into the Consortium. \nPlease visit NIST’s 2024 NIST Rapid Microbial Testing Methods Consortium Workshop website for more information. \nABOUT THE RMTM \nThe NIST Rapid Microbial Testing Methods (RMTM) Consortium addresses the need for measurements and standards\, including reference materials\, to increase confidence in the use of rapid testing for microbial contaminants in regenerative medicine and advanced therapy products. \nThe safety and quality of advanced therapies\, including cell therapy\, gene therapy\, and tissue engineered products\, must be maintained prior to patient administration. The culture-based compendial methods currently used to assess product purity (specifically to ensure absence of microbial contamination) typically take weeks\, which is inadequate for patients in urgent need of life-saving therapies. These methods are also incompatible with products that have a limited shelf-life and cannot meet good manufacturing practices required in process control and release testing. Alternative rapid microbial testing methods are needed to ensure fit for purpose safety assessments for this broad class of advanced therapeutics. \nThe NIST RMTM Consortium brings together experts across the regenerative medicine field including stakeholders in industry\, academia and government to address this need.

SUMMARY:Integration Site Analysis During Long Term Follow-Up for Gene Therapies with Integrating Viral Vectors
DESCRIPTION:The FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) Office of Therapeutic Products (OTP) is hosting a virtual scientific public workshop on the clinical use of integration site analysis (ISA) during long term follow-up following administration of gene therapies with integrating viral vectors. \nIn this workshop\, FDA will convene a panel of external experts to discuss the risk of insertional mutagenesis and best practices for ISA method design\, data analysis\, and clinical interpretation. The workshop participants will include research scientists with experience in vector design and ISA\, as well as clinician-scientists with expertise in clinical interpretation of ISA data. \nFocus for this Workshop\nAs of 2024\, twelve approved and hundreds of investigational cell-based gene therapies use integrating viral vectors. While stable integration may have considerable therapeutic benefits\, integration into genomic DNA can alter host gene expression and may contribute to secondary malignancies via insertional mutagenesis. Additionally\, the choice of vector (e.g.\, lentivirus versus gammaretrovirus) and cell substrate (e.g.\, T cells versus CD34+ cells) may also contribute to this risk. \nISA is the established approach to identify vector insertion sites. However\, ISA method design and data interpretation are highly complex and product-specific. Moreover\, ISA methods may be costly and challenging to perform. There is a critical need to understand the best practices for product design and ISA method design\, execution\, and interpretation to facilitate efficient evaluation of complex gene therapy products and protect the public from potential serious adverse events. \nThis workshop will include discussions on the following topics: \n\nEffects of Cell Substrate and Vector Design on the Risk of Vector Insertion-Related Adverse Events\nISA Methodology\, Assay Design\, and Analytical Capabilities\nISA Analysis\, Quality Control\, and Data Reporting\nClinical Follow-Up for Integrating Viral Vectors\nUsing ISA to Inform Clinical Decisions\n\nFor current guidance on the role of ISA in clinical follow-up\, please refer to section V.F “Special Considerations Regarding Integrating Vectors” of the FDA Guidance for Industry “Long Term Follow-Up After Administration of Human Gene Therapy Products” dated January 2020 (https://www.fda.gov/media/113768/download). \n Registration is required.

SUMMARY:2026 Military Health System Research Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Advancing combat casualty care\, operational medicine\, and warfighter readiness demands a dedicated forum where the full breadth of military medical research converges — and for the Department of Defense\, that forum is the Military Health System Research Symposium. Registration for the 2026 edition opens June 29\, 2026\, at noon Eastern\, ahead of the symposium’s four-day run from August 3–6 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Kissimmee\, Florida. \nThis year’s event\, themed “Harnessing the Power of Military Medical Research\,” is organized by the DoD and is expected to draw more than 3\,700 leaders\, clinicians\, scientists\, and innovators from across the military\, academia\, industry\, and international partner organizations. The theme reflects the department’s focus on accelerating research solutions that improve readiness\, performance\, survivability\, and return-to-duty outcomes for deployed service members. \nKeith Bass\, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs and the Department of Defense’s top medical leader\, underscored the event’s significance: “MHSRS is where the military medical research community comes together to solve the hardest problems facing our deployed warfighters. The discoveries shared here directly strengthen readiness\, enhance performance\, and save lives both on and off the battlefield.” \nThe 2026 program is organized around four core research domains: warfighter medical readiness\, which addresses ensuring service members are medically prepared for deployment; expeditionary medicine\, focused on delivering advanced care in austere and contested environments; warfighter performance\, covering the optimization of physical\, cognitive\, and psychological resilience; and return to duty\, centered on accelerating recovery and reintegration following injury or illness. Presentations\, breakout sessions\, and poster sessions will span all four areas. \nMHSRS serves as the central forum for presenting research in areas including combat casualty care\, operational medicine\, infectious diseases\, rehabilitation\, and human performance. The intersection of infectious disease surveillance\, medical countermeasures\, and operational readiness makes the symposium a valuable venue for biosecurity and global health practitioners working at the civil-military interface\, or those engaged in research that supports both military and civilian health emergency preparedness. \nParticipants must register for the symposium and pay the registration fee before receiving access to room booking at the host hotel\, the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center\, or the alternate partner hotel\, the Marriott Village. \nFor more information and to register\, please visit the 2026 Military Health System Research Symposium website.

SUMMARY:INTERPOL Global Biosecurity Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:As biological threats grow more complex — spanning non-state actors\, emerging biotechnologies\, and increasingly porous borders — the need for coordinated international action across law enforcement\, public health\, and scientific communities has never been more pressing. A major international conference next autumn will bring these communities together to confront that challenge directly. \nINTERPOL’s Bioterrorism Prevention Unit will host the 2nd INTERPOL Global Biosecurity Conference from 3–5 November 2026 at INTERPOL Headquarters in Lyon\, France. The three-day conference will convene law enforcement and partner agencies\, biosecurity experts\, and academics from multiple regions and professional backgrounds to examine the current biological threat landscape and advance practical\, actionable responses. \nThe conference is designed to serve as an international forum for dialogue across sectors — including health\, customs\, civil protection\, the scientific community\, policy-makers\, and the private sector — with a shared focus on strengthening biosecurity at the global level. Specific objectives include exploring current and emerging biological threats relevant to law enforcement\, sharing good practices in prevention\, preparedness\, and incident response\, and defining concrete actions to address recommendations developed during the conference. The event builds on the inaugural Global Biosecurity Conference held in 2024. \nFor professionals working at the intersection of public health security\, biosecurity\, and global health governance\, this conference offers a rare opportunity to engage directly with law enforcement perspectives on biological threats — an increasingly critical dimension of biosecurity that extends well beyond traditional public health frameworks. Sessions will address topics ranging from early-warning systems and border biosecurity to forensic investigation of biological incidents and the dual-use risks posed by emerging technologies such as synthetic biology and AI-driven protein design. \nHighlighted sessions of interest include: \n\nGlobal biological threat landscape — Mapping the evolving landscape of non-state actors seeking to acquire\, produce\, or use biological agents and toxins as weapons\, including analysis of operational methods\, technical capabilities\, and access to open-source knowledge\nIndicators and early-warning for biological threats — Showcasing integrated intelligence frameworks combining health\, customs\, laboratory\, cyber\, and human intelligence to enhance detection\, including tools for real-time data aggregation and proactive biosecurity response\nHealth and law enforcement coordination when responding to a biological incident — Examining inter-agency decision-making\, joint command structures\, and coordination mechanisms during suspected biological incidents\, including gaps and solutions for a One Health approach\nForensic examination of bio-contaminated evidence — Outlining procedures for safe evidence preservation and presenting innovative forensic techniques for identification\, attribution\, and source tracing of biological agents or toxins used in deliberate incidents\nBiosecurity at borders — Examining integrated border control systems combining customs\, veterinary\, public health\, and law enforcement functions to detect illicit biological flows\, and discussing challenges in identifying dual-use commodities related to biological weapons\nScience\, technology\, and innovation: emerging challenges and dual-use risks to biosecurity — Identifying high-risk dual-use technologies including gene editing\, synthetic biology\, and AI-driven protein design\, and proposing proactive risk mitigation strategies and responsible innovation frameworks\nScience\, technology\, and innovation: opportunities for law enforcement — Demonstrating how technologies such as portable sequencing\, AI-powered diagnostics\, and rapid biosensors are transforming field detection and situational awareness\, with case studies of technology-enabled investigations\nMoving forward legal\, policy\, and information-sharing enablers for biosecurity — Examining legal and policy frameworks that facilitate cross-sector and international cooperation\, and identifying practical challenges and good practices in information-sharing\, evidence exchange\, and mutual assistance in the biosecurity context\n\nFor more information\, please visit INTERPOL’s Global partnerships against bioterrorism website.
