SUMMARY:DARPA Panacea Program - Accessing the Dark Proteome
DESCRIPTION:The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Biological Technologies Office is holding a Proposers Day to provide information on the structure and objectives of the Panacea program. \nThe event will be held on December 14\, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM EST at the Executive Conference Center (ECC; 4075 Wilson Blvd.\, Suite 300\, Arlington\, VA 22203). Advance registration is required. \nPanacea aims to integrate systems pharmacology and advanced medicinal chemistry approaches to expand the human drug target space for therapeutic interventions in the areas of acute management of pain and inflammation and the improvement of physiological endurance under oxygen-limited conditions or environments. Panacea will support the development and proof-of-concept demonstration of a new integrated platform for the rapid prediction\, synthesis\, and validation of pharmacological interventions. \nNew drug development for the Panacea program will be focused towards solving two critical problems facing DoD personnel: alleviating pain/inflammation without unwanted side effects and positively mitigating metabolic stress. \nDARPA seeks to bridge the gaps between the chemical space required to identify and produce novel pharmacological interventions and the complex biological space whose functions must be quantified in order to predict and validate the benefits of those interventions for these two desired indications. \nThe success of the Panacea program will represent a paradigm shift in the new drug discovery process and provide new technology that enables more rapid\, safe and effective therapeutic drug development for military and civilian health. \nSpecifically excluded from this effort is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice\, that requires genetic manipulation of the intended recipient\, or that relies on discovering novel pharmacodynamic space for known therapeutics to identify additional indications. \nAdditional details\, including registration instructions\, are available at https://go.usa.gov/xP6hD.
