SUMMARY:Future Opportunities: Levers and Systems for Public-Private Partnerships to Distribute\, Dispense\, and Administer Medical Countermeasures
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies will host a workshop on “Future Opportunities: Levers and Systems for Public-Private Partnerships to Distribute\, Dispense\, and Administer Medical Countermeasures” on 2 November 2023.\n \nLessons learned from past health emergencies highlight the importance of public-private partnerships to facilitate and accelerate the research\, development\, and manufacturing of vaccines\, therapeutics\, and diagnostics (i.e.\, medical countermeasures). However\, less attention was given to public-private partnerships that enabled the successful implementation (distribution\, dispensing\, monitoring\, uptake\, and utilization) of medical countermeasures (MCMs)\, also known as the “last-mile.” \nThis is part of the Medical Countermeasures- Expanding Delivery and Increasing Uptake Through Public-Private Partnerships workshop series hosted by the National Academies Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Disasters and Emergencies. The series aims to examine lessons learned and future opportunities for public-private partnerships to facilitate the implementation of medical countermeasures to the public during a public health emergency. Speakers throughout the series will highlight various public-private partnership models deployed during recent health emergencies and discuss potential paths forward for public-private partnerships to facilitate successful implementation of medical countermeasures. \nVisit NASEM’s Medical Countermeasures- Expanding Delivery and Increasing Uptake Through Public-Private Partnerships workshop website to register.

SUMMARY:Charting a Responsible Future in AI & Biosecurity: Understanding Technology Capabilities
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies will host a webinar on November 6 on Charting a Responsible Future in AI & Biosecurity. \nOrganized by the Health and Medicine Division’s Forum on Microbial Threats and the Division of Earth and Life Studies’ Board on Life Sciences\, this is the first of two sessions bringing together technology developers\, researchers\, and policymakers working at the intersection of foundation model-based artificial intelligence (AI) and biological research to explore the impact of these technologies on innovation\, potential biosecurity risks\, and promising solutions. \nThe first session on November 6 will examine the technological capabilities and bridge the needs for risk management between developers and policymakers. \nHighlighted agenda items and strategic questions include: \n\nOverall framing: how close are we to achieving a full understanding of the genotype-to-phenotype relationship?\nBeneficial application of machine learning to develop tools that mitigate biosecurity risks\nand potential dual-use applications\nApplication of foundation models to protein design and implications for biosecurity\nDraft framework on control points and addressing risks through each mechanism\nConsidering the real vs projected risks landscape in life sciences research\, and practical approaches to address each\nThe true risks for misuse present day and in the future: What are the risks for intentional misuse? For accidental misuse?\nHow do these new technologies lower the threshold for expertise in carrying out potential attacks?\nWhat are the necessary data points to inform the development of policy frameworks that balance the innovation and risk considerations?\n\nThe second session on November 15 will focus on governance of these emerging technologies\, including challenges in defining regulatory policies as well as approaches to safeguard against these risks. \n\nMeeting Materials\n\n\n\n AI and Biosecurity Webinar_Background Material \nAI and Biosecurity Webinar_Virtual Attendance Best Practices \n\nPlease visit the National Academies’ AI & Biosecurity Webinar Registration (Forum Microbial Threats) website to register for either session.
