SUMMARY:The Long Journey to Eliminate the Deadly U.S. Chemical Weapons Stockpile
DESCRIPTION:The CWC Coalition will host a webinar entitled ‘The End of an Era: The Long Journey to Eliminate the Deadly U.S. Chemical Weapons Stockpile’ on 29 September 2023. \nWhen the United States ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in 1997\, it took on the legal obligation and the complex technical and engineering task of destroying its massive Cold War-era chemical weapons stockpile\, which consisted of some 31\,500 tons (63\,000\,000 pounds) of deadly chemical agents much of which were loaded in various forms of munitions. \nAfter years of delay\, all U.S. declared chemical weapons stockpiles were irreversibly and verifiably destroyed in July 2023\, two months ahead of the Sept. 2023 deadline set by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). \nThe event is a major milestone in disarmament: the United States was the last declared stockpile possessor state to complete its safe and permanent demilitarization of chemical weapons. \nOn Sept. 29\, this webinar will feature perspectives from a senior Defense Department official on the long path to successfully eliminate the U.S. chemical arsenal\, and the experiences of two local leaders who worked to reshape the government’s original plans for chemical weapons destruction to reduce the risks to local communities where the U.S. stockpiles were once stored. \nSpeakers: \n\nKingston Reif\, deputy assistant secretary of defense for threat reduction and arms control\nIrene Kornelly\, chair of the Colorado Citizens’ Advisory Commission\nCraig Williams\, co-chair of the Kentucky Citizens’ Advisory Commission\nDaryl Kimball\, executive director\, Arms Control Association\, moderating\n\nThis discussion will be on the record. The webinar is organized by the Arms Control Association and the Chemical Weapons Convention Coalition. \nRSVP via Zoom

SUMMARY:Public-Private Partnerships to Distribute\, Dispense\, and Administer Medical Countermeasures
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies will host a workshop on “Public-Private Partnerships for Data-Informed Decision-Making to Distribute\, Dispense\, and Administer Medical Countermeasures” on October 3\, 2023.\n \nLessons learned from past health emergencies highlight the importance of public-private partnerships to facilitate and accelerate the research\, development\, and manufacturing of vaccines\, therapeutics\, and diagnostics (i.e.\, medical countermeasures). However\, less attention was given to public-private partnerships that enabled the successful implementation (distribution\, dispensing\, monitoring\, uptake\, and utilization) of medical countermeasures (MCMs)\, also known as the “last-mile.” \nThis is part of the Medical Countermeasures- Expanding Delivery and Increasing Uptake Through Public-Private Partnerships workshop series hosted by the National Academies Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Disasters and Emergencies. The series aims to examine lessons learned and future opportunities for public-private partnerships to facilitate the implementation of medical countermeasures to the public during a public health emergency. Speakers throughout the series will highlight various public-private partnership models deployed during recent health emergencies and discuss potential paths forward for public-private partnerships to facilitate successful implementation of medical countermeasures. \nVisit NASEM’s Medical Countermeasures- Expanding Delivery and Increasing Uptake Through Public-Private Partnerships workshop website to register.

SUMMARY:What Does H5N1 Have to Do With the Price of Eggs?
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine \nAs highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) continues to disrupt animal health and the agricultural economy\, its ripple effects are being felt far beyond farms and veterinary clinics — even at the grocery store. Since its detection on U.S. poultry farms in 2022 and more recently in dairy cattle\, H5N1 has now spread across all 50 states\, raising urgent questions about animal-to-human transmission\, food supply chain vulnerabilities\, and the role of local and state responses. \nTo explore the connections between this ongoing outbreak and its broader implications\, join the National Academies for a live virtual discussion: “What Does H5N1 Have to Do With the Price of Eggs?”\nThis Healthy Exchange webinar will be held on June 3\, 2025\, from 1:00–2:30 PM ET and is designed for public health professionals\, biomedical researchers\, veterinarians\, agricultural economists\, and policymakers involved in health security and zoonotic disease response. \nFeatured Experts:\n\nDr. Susan VandeWoude – Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University. She will address wildlife reservoirs of H5N1 and outcomes in poultry\, cattle\, domestic cats\, and other species.\nDr. Kyle Shipman – Indiana State Veterinarian and Chief Administrative Officer of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health. He will discuss evidence-based management strategies for controlling disease spread in animal populations.\nDr. Jada Thompson – Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Arkansas. She will highlight the economic impact of H5N1 on livestock industries and consumer prices.\n\nThis interactive session will include a live Q&A\, giving attendees the opportunity to engage directly with these leading experts. A recording will be sent to all registrants and posted online following the event. \nPlease visit NASEM’s What Does H5N1 Have to Do With the Price of Eggs? event page for more information and to register to attend.

SUMMARY:Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy Workshop 3: Scenario Discussions
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine (NASEM) will host the third installment of its ongoing workshop series\, Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy\, on July 30–31\, 2025. This multiday event—Workshop 3: Scenario Discussions—will further explore how bioeconomy-related research intersects with global biosecurity concerns and the responsible advancement of biotechnology. \nBuilding on the framework established in earlier sessions\, this workshop will focus on two scenario-specific research domains: Non-Model Microbes and Human Health Multi-Omics.
