SUMMARY:Emerging Bioethical Issues in Biomedical Research: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine will conduct a one day workshop on Feb 26\, 2020 to bring together stakeholders to discuss potential ethical issues that may arise from new and emerging trends in biomedical research (including behavioral and social research) and society. \nThe workshop will identify a range of current and emerging bioethical issues – both in basic and clinical research – and explore a broad-range of stakeholder perspectives. Input will be sought from a variety of perspectives which may include patients/participants/individuals\, bioethicists\, academic and industry researchers\, clinicians\, and government representatives. The workshop will describe the state of the emerging science and potential pressing\, recurring\, emerging\, and/or anticipated future bioethical issues in biomedical research and society that fall within the scope of the research and policy activities of the NIH. Potential topics may include: \n\nUse of digital technologies\, artificial intelligence\, and machine learning in biomedical research and clinical care;\nEmerging ethical challenges for sharing data from human research participants and use of human biospecimens;\nHealth equity and health disparities in research\, including:\n\nRecognizing and addressing barriers to participation in research and clinical care across diverse populations and groups\nUnderstanding the impact of cultural and social context on health and disease\nEquitable distribution of the benefits and burdens of research;\n\n\nInnovative study designs\, including crowdsourcing of research and citizen science;\nNovel approaches for enhancing bioethics infrastructure and training;\nNew means for assessing and enhancing scientific workforce diversity; and/or\nInnovative solutions for enhancing research oversight infrastructure.\n\nGiven the broad scope of bioethical issues in research and the difficulty in addressing all possible issues in a single workshop\, the following topics fall outside the scope of this workshop as they are being addressed in multiple other venues: gene editing\, gene drives\, human-animal chimera research\, human fetal tissue research\, neuroethics\, and animal care and welfare. The planning committee will develop the agenda for the workshop\, select and invite speakers and discussants\, and moderate or identify moderators for the discussions. A workshop proceedings will be prepared by a designated rapporteur based on the information gathered and discussions held during the workshop in accordance with National Academies institutional policies and procedures. \nNote: Registration for in-person attendance is full. You may register for the webcast HERE. If you are interested in signing up for the in-person waitlist\, please register HERE and we will contact you if a spot becomes available.

SUMMARY:The Role of Digital Health Technologies in Drug Development - Webcast
DESCRIPTION:The Role of Digital Health Technologies in Drug Development: A Workshop will be webcast on March 24\, 2020. \nAs digital health technologies (e.g. smartphone apps\, wearables\, and mobile-device-based tools) – hardware and software – become increasingly available to consumers\, providers\, and researchers\, there are new opportunities to address critical barriers or “pain points\,” better connect patients and health care providers\, and incorporate patient input throughout the drug research and development (R&D) life cycle. However\, a lack of clarity when it comes to the evaluation\, selection\, and implementation of digital health technologies has impeded the practical application of these innovations. Lessons learned from the direct-to-consumer genomics industry\, which has been increasingly moving into the clinical health space over the last 10 years\, may help inform the integration of digital health technologies into drug R&D. \nThis workshop will provide a venue to discuss challenges and opportunities in digital health technologies for improving the probability of success in drug development and enabling precision medicine. Workshop participants may consider key components for an evidence-based framework for applying digital health technologies towards drug research and development. \nThe Forum on Drug Discovery\, Development\, and Translation and the Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health will host a public workshop on March 24\, 2020 which will feature invited presentations and discussions to: \nDiscuss challenges/questions that digital health technologies may be uniquely suited to address and opportunities for digital health technologies to enable better patient care and more efficient clinical trials; \nConsider strategies for evaluating and selecting digital health technologies that are fit-for-purpose in drug development (e.g. establishing appropriate evidentiary criteria); \nDiscuss privacy\, ethical\, and regulatory issues related to the use of digital health technologies; \nExamine currently validated and/or FDA-approved drug development applications for digital health technologies; \nConsider opportunities to enable the practical application of digital health technologies for improving drug development (e.g. sharing best practices for the validation and use of digital health technologies\, harmonizing guidelines across sectors).

SUMMARY:Policy vs. Pandemics: Polarization and Public Health Emergency Preparedness
DESCRIPTION:George Mason University Schar School of Policy and Government Biodefense\, MPP and MPA Programs will co-host a no-fee webinar event\, “Policy vs. Pandemics: Polarization and Public Health Emergency Preparedness” on March 26\, 2020 from 6:00pm – 7:30pm Eastern. \nThe sweeping effects of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic on the social\, economic\, and political framework of the United States highlights the vital importance of a resilient public health infrastructure. In the aftermath of this unprecedented pandemic\, the United States will need to reconsider its approach to biosurveillance\, public health emergency preparedness\, intergovernmental coordination\, and the development of countermeasures in advance of the next health crisis. In the past\, such efforts have been hindered by partisan polarization between Republicans and Democrats\, even as some crucial public health emergency policy was only made possible through bipartisan cooperation. While considering lessons from the past\, this discussion will address bipartisan efforts to move forward on approaches to protect the American people in the future\, such as the implementation of the National Biodefense Strategy. \nDr. Nathan Myers is an associate professor of political science and public administration at Indiana State University. His research interests include public health policy\, U.S. executive branch politics and administration\, emergency planning and preparedness\, and regulation of biotechnology. He is the author of Pandemics and Polarization: Implications of Partisan Budgeting for Responding to Public Health Emergencies (Lexington Books\, 2019). \nDue to the coronavirus pandemic\, this event will be held as a live webinar instead of an in-person talk. Blackboard Collaborate Ultra works best with Google Chrome and does not work with Internet Explorer. Participants will be able to use the “Raise Hand” function in Blackboard Collaborate to ask questions at the end of Dr. Myer’s prepared remarks. \nEveryone who registers for the webinar will receive a 30% discount on his book. \nThis webinar will be recorded and the video will be posted to the YouTube channels for The Pandora Report and the Schar School of Policy and Government . \nIf you have any questions\, please email: biodefense@gmu.edu

SUMMARY:Biotechnology for Materiel and Defense Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Biotechnology for Material and Defense Symposium virtual event will be hosted by the National Defense Industrial Association on June 17\, 2020. \nRecent advances in Synthetic Biology\, Biotechnology\, and their supporting infrastructure—biodesign\, automation\, artificial intelligence\, and data analytics—are affording transformational impacts beyond traditional opportunity spaces to produce natural polymers and composites\, synthesize new molecules for coatings and resins\, and ‘grow’ structural materials such as leathers and foams. \nFuture capabilities such as biosensors and nano-structure material production are on the cusp of implementation. The far future promises the ability for in-situ production\, self-healing\, and more. This ability to harness nature’s processes to produce molecules and materials in a sustainable way has the potential to not only have a positive impact on the environment and domestic manufacturing but also radically change how we design\, build\, maintain\, and support our troops. \nPlease visit the NDIA’s Biotechnology for Material and Defense Symposium website for more information and to register. \n

SUMMARY:COVID-19\, Systemic Racism\, and the Responses of HBCUs: A Virtual Town Hall Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering and Medicine Board on Higher Education and Workforce will host a virtual town hall on Jun 29\, 2020 to discuss COVID-19\, Systemic Racism\, and the Responses of HBCUs. \nHistorically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are among the nation’s most vital and vibrant institutions\, serving the educational needs of hundreds of thousands of students\, advancing the full spectrum of human knowledge\, and invigorating the cultural\, social\, and economic horizons of the regions they serve. And today\, these universities are at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19\, researching treatments\, keeping their states and communities informed\, and treating patients at academic medical centers.  They are also at the forefront of the nation’s struggles against institutionalized discrimination\, systemic inequality\, and anti-Black racism that are being brought to bear every day in the forms of demonstrations and advocacy in most U.S. communities. \nHow have HBCUs responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and to the recent events surrounding the murder of George Floyd?  As HBCU presidents look toward resuming in-person classes in the fall\, what have they learned from the COVID-19 crisis\, how will their institutions evolve as a result\, and what might that mean for the future of HBCUs in America?  How will HBCUs adapt to the serious financial challenges likely to arise in states and the nation in the months ahead as a consequence of COVID-19? What are HBCU campus leaders doing in preparation for a stronger and higher-profile role in terms of advocacy and leadership in directly addressing anti-Black racism in this country? \nPlease join the presidents of three of the nation’s premier HBCUs as they discuss COVID-19 and issues of racial injustice. This event is hosted by the National Academies’ Board on Higher Education and Workforce and Issues in Science and Technology and sponsored by the Kresge Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense HBCU/MI Program. \nSpeakers include: \n\nMakola M. Abdullah\, President of Virginia State University\nMary Schmidt Campbell\, President of Spelman College\nC. Reynold Verret\, President of Xavier University of Louisiana\n\nModerated by Gilda Barabino\, President-elect of Olin College of Engineering \nPlease contact John Veras (jveras@nas.edu) for questions.

SUMMARY:The U.S. Chemical Supply Chain: Vulnerabilities Highlighted by COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology will convene a webcast meeting on July 2\, 2020 to discuss The U.S. Chemical Supply Chain: Vulnerabilities Highlighted by COVID-19. \nThroughout the COVID-19 pandemic\, the chemical industry in the United States has maintained operating status and continues to be at the forefront of worker safety. Despite these achievements\, the pandemic exposed some of the vulnerabilities in the chemical industry’s supply chain. \nWith an increased demand for chemical products\, such as isopropyl alcohol for the production of hand sanitizer\, the United States has seen firsthand the inflexibility of the supply chain to increase or alter production. The “just-in-time” manufacturing approach that many companies previously adopted to maximize efficiency and lower costs has now presented the industry with production challenges and raises the question of how demand can be met if a disruption to the supply chain occurs. Also of note are the specialty chemical and pharmaceutical industries\, which are increasingly vulnerable as they have outsourced many of their operations overseas. \nIn the event of a global disruption or a localized disruption unique to the point of origin\, the United States risks not being able to obtain the products it critically needs—such as personal protective equipment\, medications\, and medical equipment—as has occurred in the case of COVID-19. \n This webinar\, hosted by the Chemical Sciences Roundtable\, will aim to highlight these two vulnerabilities in the supply chain: the inelasticity of the chemical supply chain and the risks posed by the overseas manufacturing of specialty and pharmaceutical chemicals. \nSpeakers include: \n\nDr. David Bem\, VP of Science and Technology and CTO at PPG Industries\, Inc.\nDr. T. Kevin Swift\, Chief Economist at American Chemistry Council\nDr. Ron Piervincenzi\, CEO of United States Pharmacopeia\n\nA recording of the webinar will be made available after the event.
