SUMMARY:AMR One Health Priority Research Agenda: Transmission
DESCRIPTION:A webinar on the One Health Priority Research Agenda for AMR will be held 6 December 2023\, part of a series hosted by the Quadripartite organizations. This session will focus on transmission. \nThe Quadripartite organizations\, made up of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)\, World Health Organization (WHO)\, and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH)\, established the Quadripartite Technical Group and developed the One Health Priority Research Agenda for AMR (AMR-OHPRA) a joint initiative to assist in directing and catalyzing scientific interest and financial investments for AMR priority research across sectors for countries and funding bodies. \n\n\nThe research agenda also serves as a guide to prevent and mitigate AMR within the One Health approach that will help policymakers\, researchers\, and a multidisciplinary scientific community to work together on solutions. \nThe webinar will include a panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities that this Agenda brings to the One Health community and how this agenda can attract and motivate donors\, the scientific community\, and governments to support research addressing the specific areas identified on Transmission in the AMR-OHPRA. \nHighlighted agenda items include: \nOpening remarks – George Matheu\, WHO \nAMR-OHPRA Transmission pillar – Francesca Latronico\, FAO \nDiscussion panel: \n\nHeike Schmitt – Delft Technical University\, The Netherlands\nPhil Taylor – Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International\, UK\nRungtip Chuanchuen – Chulalongkorn University\, Thailand\nAmit Khurana – Centre for Science and Environment\, India\nPilar Donado – Colombian Corporation of Agricultural Research (AGROSAVIA)\, Columbia\n\nRegister for the webinar here.

SUMMARY:What Does H5N1 Have to Do With the Price of Eggs?
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine \nAs highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) continues to disrupt animal health and the agricultural economy\, its ripple effects are being felt far beyond farms and veterinary clinics — even at the grocery store. Since its detection on U.S. poultry farms in 2022 and more recently in dairy cattle\, H5N1 has now spread across all 50 states\, raising urgent questions about animal-to-human transmission\, food supply chain vulnerabilities\, and the role of local and state responses. \nTo explore the connections between this ongoing outbreak and its broader implications\, join the National Academies for a live virtual discussion: “What Does H5N1 Have to Do With the Price of Eggs?”\nThis Healthy Exchange webinar will be held on June 3\, 2025\, from 1:00–2:30 PM ET and is designed for public health professionals\, biomedical researchers\, veterinarians\, agricultural economists\, and policymakers involved in health security and zoonotic disease response. \nFeatured Experts:\n\nDr. Susan VandeWoude – Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University. She will address wildlife reservoirs of H5N1 and outcomes in poultry\, cattle\, domestic cats\, and other species.\nDr. Kyle Shipman – Indiana State Veterinarian and Chief Administrative Officer of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health. He will discuss evidence-based management strategies for controlling disease spread in animal populations.\nDr. Jada Thompson – Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Arkansas. She will highlight the economic impact of H5N1 on livestock industries and consumer prices.\n\nThis interactive session will include a live Q&A\, giving attendees the opportunity to engage directly with these leading experts. A recording will be sent to all registrants and posted online following the event. \nPlease visit NASEM’s What Does H5N1 Have to Do With the Price of Eggs? event page for more information and to register to attend.

SUMMARY:Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy Workshop 3: Scenario Discussions
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine (NASEM) will host the third installment of its ongoing workshop series\, Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy\, on July 30–31\, 2025. This multiday event—Workshop 3: Scenario Discussions—will further explore how bioeconomy-related research intersects with global biosecurity concerns and the responsible advancement of biotechnology. \nBuilding on the framework established in earlier sessions\, this workshop will focus on two scenario-specific research domains: Non-Model Microbes and Human Health Multi-Omics. Participants will examine both the transformative potential and dual-use risks associated with these areas of innovation\, identifying strategies to responsibly manage emerging threats without stifling scientific progress. \nWorkshop Objectives Include: \n\nContinuing scenario-based exploration of bioeconomy-relevant technologies.\nIdentifying both beneficial outcomes and security risks of using non-model microbes and human health multi-omics in research and biomanufacturing.\nApplying and refining frameworks to mitigate dual-use potential while supporting innovation.\nFostering dialogue among scientists\, public health experts\, and global health security professionals.\n\nThis event is part of the broader Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy – A Workshop Series\, a global initiative by NASEM that convenes interdisciplinary experts to modernize guidance on dual-use risk assessment in the context of bioeconomic development. The series aims to balance innovation with international security by highlighting strategies for responsible research and biotechnological application. \nFinal Workshop in the Series: \n\nWorkshop 4: Scenario and Workshop Series Summary Discussion | August 6–7\, 2025\n\nRegistration information has not yet been released. Interested participants are encouraged to check the event site for the most up-to-date details. \nTo learn more about Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy Workshop 3: Scenario Discussions\, please visit the official NASEM event page.
