SUMMARY:Webinar: Local Health Department Role in Containment of Novel Resistance
DESCRIPTION:As issues with drug resistant pathogens have emerged across the country\, local health departments have been called on to lead and support the containment of novel or targeted multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). Join NACCHO to learn more about the experiences of three local health departments who have been affected by containment events. \nBy the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe the experiences of three local health departments supporting containment responses\nIdentify the role of local health departments in containment of MDROs\nDiscuss how other local health departments may prepare for similar events\n\nREGISTER.

She has a B.S. in Zoology from the University of South Florida\, and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Miami. She is a field ecologist who studies how global change affects biodiversity. She is interested in how the loss of biodiversity affects communities and ecosystems\, and how human activities contribute to the spread of disease and loss of biodiversity. Dr. Lips was a Jefferson Science Fellow at the Department of State\, where she worked in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs\, in the Office of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs\, and where she served as an Embassy Science Fellow in Colombia. Dr. Lips is a Research Associate at the US Museum of Natural History\, an AAAS Leshner Leadership Public Engagement Fellow\, an AAAS Fellow\, an ESA Fellow\, and an Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellow. She was awarded the President’s Award of the Chicago Zoological Society\, a Bay and Paul Biodiversity Leadership Award\, the Sabin Amphibian Conservation Award in 2012\, and the inaugural UMD Impact Communicator Award. Dr. Lips is interested in increasing engagement on environmental issues\, promoting scientific leadership\, and fostering international scientific collaborations.

SUMMARY:CDC Second Wednesday Webinar: Medical Countermeasure Planning
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will present the March Second Wednesday Webinar from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. EDT on Wednesday\, March 13. The presentation will highlight anthrax and pandemic influenza readiness key components in preparation for the next Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) cooperative agreement performance period. \nRegistration is not required to join this webinar via Adobe Connect. Participants can log onto https://adobeconnect.cdc.gov/r6ooog3mlz5/ to view the webinar. To listen to the audio portion via a phone line\, dial 1-888-455-3007 and enter participant passcode 4330935. \nCEUs will not be offered for this presentation. For more information on the Second Wednesday Webinar series\, contact preparedness@cdc.gov \nBackground: PHEP is a critical source of funding for state\, local\, and territorial public health departments. Since 2002\, the PHEP cooperative agreement has provided assistance to public health departments across the nation. This helps health departments build and strengthen their abilities to effectively respond to a range of public health threats\, including infectious diseases\, natural disasters\, and biological\, chemical\, nuclear\, and radiological events. Preparedness activities funded by the PHEP cooperative agreement specifically targeted the development of emergency-ready public health departments that are flexible and adaptable. \nIn response to the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic\, CDC also helped communities through the Public Health Emergency Response grant to increase state and local preparedness and response capacity during the pandemic. The recipients included the 62 PHEP awardees.

SUMMARY:Fighting Ebola in DRC: New Tools and New Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Join Doctors Without Borders for a live webcast panel discussion on January 29 from 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM EST on efforts to contain the current Ebola epidemic in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). \nMSF teams are responding to the second largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded\, trying to halt the spread of this highly infectious\, deadly disease. The epicenter of the outbreak is in a conflict area in North Kivu province\, making a rapid response difficult. \nPanelists will explore the evolving medical approaches to fighting the Ebola virus\, the initiation of a randomized controlled trial testing treatment options\, and the unique ethical and logistical considerations this outbreak presents. \nAt the time of the event\, tune in to the webcast here. \n\nKarin Huster\, MSF Project Coordinator\, earned a BS in Nursing from the University of Washington in 2005 and her Master in Public Health degree from UW’s department of global health in 2013. After nine years working as a nurse in the intensive care unit of a large trauma center\, Karin now focuses on responding to humanitarian emergencies\, either in a clinical capacity\, as a field epidemiologist\, or field coordinator. She has also worked as an advisor to the emergency response branch of USAID. Most recently\, Karin returned from DRC where she helped launch MSF’s response to the Ebola outbreak and later returned to manage an MSF transit center for people with suspected cases of Ebola. In 2014\, she worked as part of the response in each of the three West African countries affected by the largest Ebola outbreak in history. She has also worked in Iraq\, Bangladesh\, Nigeria\, Haiti\, and Lebanon. \nDr. Brian D’Cruz\, MSF Physician\, has worked with MSF since 2011\, and recently returned from MSF’s Ebola intervention in Beni\, DRC. In 2014–2015\, Brian participated in MSF’s response to the West Africa Ebola outbreak in Guinea. SUMMARY:FDA Public Webinar: Genome Editing in Animals
DESCRIPTION:On December 3\, 2018\, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM)\, with participation from the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER)\, will hold a public webinar about genome editing in animals. \nGenome editing is an innovative and rapidly evolving technology that offers many promising benefits to both human and animal health\, animal well-being\, and food production. This webinar is an initial step in FDA’s public communication strategy to help innovators understand FDA regulation and show support for safe and responsible innovation that benefits public health. \nThe webinar will focus primarily on the current scientific evidence\, promising uses of this technology in animals\, and the potential risks. It will also provide information about CVM’s flexible\, risk-based approach to the regulation of intentional genomic alterations to animals and address common misconceptions associated with the regulation of these products. A portion of the webinar will be dedicated to answering stakeholder-submitted questions. \nGenome editing in plants for human and/or animal food will not be covered. \nThe webinar is open to the public\, but advance registration is required to participate in the live-cast webinar. \nSee also: \n\nRegistration: CVM Public Webinar about Genome Editing in Animals\nFDA’s Regulation of Plant and Animal Biotechnology Products\nFDA Plant and Animal Biotechnology Innovation Action Plan\nCVM Update: FDA Announces Plant and Animal Biotechnology Innovation Action Plan\nStatement from FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb\, M.D.\, and Deputy Commissioner Anna Abram on the FDA’s new plan to advance plant\, animal biotechnology innovation
