SUMMARY:National Museum of Scotland Outbreak Lab Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this hands‐on\, experimental workshop\, pupils will use real laboratory techniques from Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre to track the outbreak of an infectious\, parasitic disease.  \nSuitable for: S1–3 \nCost: Free of charge   \nNo of pupils: 24 per session max \nTimings: 10:30–13:00 or 11:00–13:30 \n(60 minute workshop\, 60 minute exhibition & gallery visit) \nDates: Tue 3–Thu 5 Mar 2020  \nIn this hands‐on\, experimental workshop\, pupils will use real laboratory techniques from Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre to track the outbreak of an infectious\, parasitic disease.  \n They will use micropipettes and other lab equipment to perform a mock diagnostic test\, supported by scientists from The Roslin Institute and Edinburgh Infectious Diseases. Pupils will work as a group to interpret their results and agree on a recommended course of action.  \n The session l also covers some of the science behind disease diagnosis and how parasitic diseases can spread between animals and humans\, and gives pupils the opportunity to meet and interact with professional scientists who are working on infectious diseases.  \n Class A  \n10:30–11:30 – Workshop  \n11:30–12:00 – Visit Parasites exhibition \n12:00–12:30 – Visit Science & Technology galleries  \n12:30–13:00 – Lunch (space set aside in lunchroom for packed lunches) \n Class B \n11:00–11:30 – Visit Parasites exhibition \n11:30–12:00 – Visit Science & Technology galleries  \n12:00–12:30 – Lunch (space set aside in lunchroom for packed lunches) \n12:30–13:30 – Workshop  \nThis event is run in partnership with the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute\, Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre and Edinburgh Infectious Diseases. \nClasses must be accompanied by a teacher.  \nBy reserving 1 timeslot\, you can bring up to 24 pupils. If you are bringing less than 24\, please let us know on the booking form and we may combine with a small class from a different school.  \n\nTravel Subsidy \nThe University of Edinburgh is able to provide some financial support towards travel expenses for schools attending this workshop. This is specifically targeted at state schools in deprived areas\, where more than 45% of pupils are in the lowest 20% SIMD category. The support would be up to a max of £200 per school. This is available on a first come\, first served basis. Please enquire upon booking for further information.

SUMMARY:The Role of Digital Health Technologies in Drug Development - Webcast
DESCRIPTION:The Role of Digital Health Technologies in Drug Development: A Workshop will be webcast on March 24\, 2020. \nAs digital health technologies (e.g. smartphone apps\, wearables\, and mobile-device-based tools) – hardware and software – become increasingly available to consumers\, providers\, and researchers\, there are new opportunities to address critical barriers or “pain points\,” better connect patients and health care providers\, and incorporate patient input throughout the drug research and development (R&D) life cycle. However\, a lack of clarity when it comes to the evaluation\, selection\, and implementation of digital health technologies has impeded the practical application of these innovations. Lessons learned from the direct-to-consumer genomics industry\, which has been increasingly moving into the clinical health space over the last 10 years\, may help inform the integration of digital health technologies into drug R&D. \nThis workshop will provide a venue to discuss challenges and opportunities in digital health technologies for improving the probability of success in drug development and enabling precision medicine. Workshop participants may consider key components for an evidence-based framework for applying digital health technologies towards drug research and development. \nThe Forum on Drug Discovery\, Development\, and Translation and the Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health will host a public workshop on March 24\, 2020 which will feature invited presentations and discussions to: \nDiscuss challenges/questions that digital health technologies may be uniquely suited to address and opportunities for digital health technologies to enable better patient care and more efficient clinical trials; \nConsider strategies for evaluating and selecting digital health technologies that are fit-for-purpose in drug development (e.g. establishing appropriate evidentiary criteria); \nDiscuss privacy\, ethical\, and regulatory issues related to the use of digital health technologies; \nExamine currently validated and/or FDA-approved drug development applications for digital health technologies; \nConsider opportunities to enable the practical application of digital health technologies for improving drug development (e.g. sharing best practices for the validation and use of digital health technologies\, harmonizing guidelines across sectors).
