SUMMARY:COVID-19 Effects on the Food and Agricultural System
DESCRIPTION:The Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources (BANR) of the National Academies of Science\, Engineering\, and Medicine hosted a webinar on Friday\, June 19 from 10:00 – Noon EDT with a virtual panel discussion on COVID 19 effects on the food and agricultural system\, which has experienced severe stress from a combination of factors. Workers’ health has been placed at risk\, producers have lost markets\, and animals and crops have been sacrificed. Meanwhile\, food prices are on the rise and unemployed Americans have turned in greater numbers than ever to overstressed food banks. A panel of distinguished participants in the food and agricultural system offered perspectives on the impacts and how we can learn from them. \nInvited perspectives include: \n\nA.G. Kawamura\, Owner\, Orange County Produce\, and former Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (2003-2010)\nTom Vilsack\, President and CEO\, U.S. Dairy Export Council\, and former United States Secretary of Agriculture (2009 – 2017)\n\nThe session was moderated by BANR Chairman\, Chuck Rice (Kansas State University). Members of the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources lead with questions to the presenters\, and the public was able to type in questions to be asked by the moderator. \nVisit NASEM’s website to register.
