SUMMARY:Emerging Bioethical Issues in Biomedical Research: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine will conduct a one day workshop on Feb 26\, 2020 to bring together stakeholders to discuss potential ethical issues that may arise from new and emerging trends in biomedical research (including behavioral and social research) and society. \nThe workshop will identify a range of current and emerging bioethical issues – both in basic and clinical research – and explore a broad-range of stakeholder perspectives. Input will be sought from a variety of perspectives which may include patients/participants/individuals\, bioethicists\, academic and industry researchers\, clinicians\, and government representatives. The workshop will describe the state of the emerging science and potential pressing\, recurring\, emerging\, and/or anticipated future bioethical issues in biomedical research and society that fall within the scope of the research and policy activities of the NIH. Potential topics may include: \n\nUse of digital technologies\, artificial intelligence\, and machine learning in biomedical research and clinical care;\nEmerging ethical challenges for sharing data from human research participants and use of human biospecimens;\nHealth equity and health disparities in research\, including:\n\nRecognizing and addressing barriers to participation in research and clinical care across diverse populations and groups\nUnderstanding the impact of cultural and social context on health and disease\nEquitable distribution of the benefits and burdens of research;\n\n\nInnovative study designs\, including crowdsourcing of research and citizen science;\nNovel approaches for enhancing bioethics infrastructure and training;\nNew means for assessing and enhancing scientific workforce diversity; and/or\nInnovative solutions for enhancing research oversight infrastructure.\n\nGiven the broad scope of bioethical issues in research and the difficulty in addressing all possible issues in a single workshop\, the following topics fall outside the scope of this workshop as they are being addressed in multiple other venues: gene editing\, gene drives\, human-animal chimera research\, human fetal tissue research\, neuroethics\, and animal care and welfare. As the number of cases increases\, concerns are mounting that the global community may not be adequately prepared to prevent the disease from significantly spreading. \nThe virus has already spread to more than 20 countries\, including the United States\, with at least six confirmed cases and more than 100 suspected across 36 states. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is screening passengers arriving from China at several airports\, but much remains unknown about transmission and symptoms\, and a CDC-developed diagnostic test has yet to be distributed across the country. \nPanel participants will offer their perspectives on the role of the federal government in managing the crisis\, the lack of transparency by the Communist Chinese Government\, implications for U.S national security\, and how the country can better prepare for when the next pandemic strikes. \nThe event will feature U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman\, co-chair of the Bipartisan Commission on Biodefense\, scholars from Hudson Institute\, and other subject matter experts. \nNOTE: This event is open to the press. DESCRIPTION:The 11th meeting of the Tick-borne Disease Working Group (TBDWG) will be held on January 28 and 29\, 2020\, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET on both days (times subject to change). \nThe meeting will be held at the in Washington D.C. and by webcast. DESCRIPTION:The National Academies’ Forum on Drug Discovery\, Development\, and Translation will host a virtual public workshop on Jan 26\, 2021 as part of a web series forum of events to discuss critical policy for advancement of biopharmaceutical innovation nationally and globally. \nThis virtual public workshop will provide a venue for stakeholders to consider a transformed clinical trial enterprise for 2030. Workshop participants will consider lessons learned from progress and setbacks over the past 10 years\, since the previous workshop\, Envisioning a Transformed Clinical Trials Enterprise in the United States\, and\, looking forward\, discuss goals and key priorities for advancing a clinical trials enterprise that is more efficient\, effective\, person-centered\, inclusive\, and integrated into the health delivery system of 2030. \nThe event will provide an overview discussion on how an envisioned 2030 clinical trials enterprise may differ from the current system. It will discuss key challenges and opportunities in improving person-centeredness and inclusivity\, building resilience and transparency\, and integrating new technologies. \nThe workshop session will consider changes in the clinical trials enterprise made in response to COVID-19 that may establish positive and sustainable examples for the future\, and consider specific action steps that individual stakeholders could take to support an envisioned change from 2020 to 2030. \nFor additional information on the workshop series\, please visit the project page. \nBackground\nClinical trials research has changed dramatically over the last decade. The biological\, physical\, and digital spheres are merging; clinical research and health care are at a critical juncture; new approaches enable the collection of data in real-world settings; and new modalities\, such as digital health technologies and artificial intelligence applications\, are changing possibilities for the conduct of clinical research. These opportunities hold great promise for advancing our understanding of health maintenance and prevention\, disease progression\, and developing new therapies for patients. At the same time\, the clinical research enterprise is strained by rising costs\, an evolving regulatory and economic landscape\, increasing clinical trial complexity\, difficulties in the recruitment and retention of research participants\, and a clinical research workforce that is under tremendous stress. Some\, but not all\, of these challenges and opportunities were predicted in the 2011 National Academies workshop\, Envisioning a Transformed Clinical Trials Enterprise in the United States: Establishing an Agenda for 2020. There is now a need for stakeholders from across the clinical research lifecycle to consider lessons learned from progress and setbacks over the past 10 years and broadly consider goals and key priorities for advancing a clinical trials enterprise that is more efficient\, effective\, person-centered\, inclusive\, and integrated into the health delivery system of 2030.

SUMMARY:Ultraviolet Disinfection Technologies & Healthcare Associated Infections
DESCRIPTION:The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is co-hosting a 2-day meeting with the International Ultra Violet Association (IUVA) focused on examining measurement\, standards\, technology and data research needs to promote innovation in the effective use and implementation of ultraviolet-C (UVC) technology in healthcare settings for the reduction and prevention of healthcare associated infections (HAIs). \nThis unique event provides the community with an opportunity to learn about the current science in HAI prevention with UVC and to discuss standard needs in both the physical and biological performance areas for UVC disinfection devices. \nHAIs are recognized as an important public health and patient safety issue. UVC devices are shown to reduce the incidence of many HAIs\, but the adoption of the technology by the healthcare industry has been sparse. There is a lack of performance standards to help healthcare managers make informed\, credible investment decisions. Measurements and standards in the light and biological sciences are needed to accelerate the adoption of UVC technology in the healthcare market. \nThrough two days of targeted programming\, attendees will learn about the latest developments in UVC technology\, engineering and operations\, and regulatory issues related to disinfection. Current measurements\, standards and data supporting UVC disinfection will be discussed in the context of innovation and implementation. Input from the event will be used by the community for the development of proposed performance standards for UVC disinfection devices. \nProgramming will include plenary presentations from invited keynote subject matter experts and round table engagements with representatives from industry\, academia and federal agencies. There will be optional campus lab tours where attendees can view up-close NIST’s metrology R&D in the UV and biological sciences\, including UV calibrations and biological measurements. \nRegistration contact: Karen M.
