SUMMARY:Antibiotic Awareness Week 2019
DESCRIPTION:Antibiotic Awareness Week will be held 18-24 November 2019 with countries around the world designating this week for focused awareness campaigns. \nAntibiotics save lives and are critical tools for treating a number of common and more serious infections\, like those that can lead to sepsis. However\, at least 30% of the antibiotics in U.S. outpatient settings are prescribed unnecessarily. Any time antibiotics are used\, they can cause side effects and lead to antibiotic resistance\, one of the most urgent threats to the public’s health. \nAntibiotic resistance happens when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them. Each year in the United States\, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23\,000 people die as a direct result. Many more die from complications from antibiotic-resistant infections. \nKEY POINTS\n\n\nAntibiotics save lives. When a patient needs antibiotics\, the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects and antibiotic resistance.\nAntibiotics aren’t always the answer. Everyone can help improve antibiotic prescribing and use. Improving the way healthcare professionals prescribe antibiotics\, and the way we take antibiotics\, helps keep us healthy now\, helps fight antibiotic resistance\, and ensures that these lifesaving antibiotics will be available for future generations.\nAntibiotics do not work on viruses\, such as those that cause colds\, flu\, bronchitis\, or runny noses\, even if the mucus is thick\, yellow\, or green.\nAntibiotics are only needed for treating infections caused by bacteria\, but even some bacterial infections get better without antibiotics. Antibiotics aren’t needed for many sinus infections and some ear infections.\nAn antibiotic will not make you feel better if you have a virus. Respiratory viruses usually go away in a week or two without treatment. Ask your healthcare professional about the best way to feel better while your body fights off the virus.\nWhen antibiotics aren’t needed\, they won’t help you\, and the side effects could still cause harm. Side effects range from minor to very severe health problems. When you need antibiotics for a bacterial infection\, then the benefits usually outweigh the risk of side effects.\nTaking antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them.\nIf you need antibiotics\, take them exactly as prescribed. Talk with your doctor if you have any questions about your antibiotics.\nTalk with your doctor if you develop any side effects\, especially severe diarrhea\, since that could be a Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile or C. diff) infection\, which needs to be treated.\nDo your best to stay healthy and keep others healthy by cleaning hands\, covering coughs\, staying home when sick\, and getting recommended vaccines\, such as the flu vaccine.

Foreign companies cannot gain membership due to MCDC’s requirement that members obtain a DD2345 (military critical technical data agreement). However\, foreign companies can be subcontractors (team members) on projects awarded through the Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) as long as they can meet the terms and conditions of the OTA. The MCDC member awarded the project is responsible for flowing the applicable requirements down to the foreign company. \nThe Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) Consortium was formed in response to the Government’s expressed interest to establish an Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) with an eligible entity or group of entities\, to include industry\, academic\, and not-for-profit partners\, for advanced development efforts to support agencies that have a need to prototype new technologies related to Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction. DESCRIPTION:Another session of Bagels and Bio/Chem Defense will be held on Friday\, October 25th at the National Academies Keck Center (500 Fifth Street NW\, Washington DC). \nThis month will be an expanded session (from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) focused on qualitative frameworks that could provide the basis for structured expert discussions of the potential security concerns posed by emerging technologies in the life sciences. \nIn August the National Academies and the InterAcademy Partnership organized a one-day workshop during the BWC Meeting of Experts to give a small international group of people attending the sessions the opportunity to pilot test how two such frameworks might be applied to BWC-relevant case examples. This month’s session will feature a scaled-down version of the exercise. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to work in small groups to apply either the framework from the 2018 National Academies report\, Biodefense in the Age of Synthetic Biology or the technology assessment portion of the framework from Jonathan Tucker’s 2012 project on Innovation\, Dual Use\, and Security. \nThis event is part of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine’s discussion series on biological and chemical defense and security issues. SUMMARY:National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day\, October 15\, is observed each year to focus on the continuing and disproportionate impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) on Hispanics/Latinos in the United States. \nThe Latino Commission on AIDS (LCOA)\, the Hispanic Federation  and other organizations organize this day to build capacity for non-profit organizations and health departments to reach Latino/Hispanic communities\, promote HIV testing\, and provide HIV prevention information and access to care. \nIn 2017\, 26% of newly diagnosed HIV infections occurred in Hispanics/Latinos. Seventy-five percent of these newly diagnosed HIV infections in Hispanics/Latinos were in men who have sex with men (MSM)\, and an additional 3% were in MSM who inject drugs[1]. \nAn analysis of the behaviors of Hispanic/Latino MSM included in CDC’s National HIV Behavioral Surveillance system found that nearly 75% reported having had condomless anal sex during 2017 [2]. However\, because some of these MSM reported using preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP)\, fewer than 60% of those who were non–U.S.-born and fewer than 50% of those who were U.S.-born were having unprotected anal sex[2]. \nNational Latinx AIDS Awareness Day is an opportunity to encourage increased HIV prevention efforts among Hispanics/Latinos.
