DESCRIPTION:The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Biological Technologies Office is holding a Proposers Day meeting on 17 May 2019 to provide information to potential proposers on the objectives of the new ReVector program and to facilitate teaming. \nThe goal of ReVector is to develop an easily delivered treatment — for example\, a topical solution — that safely and temporarily modifies the human skin microbiome to alter scents and thereby reduce attraction of disease-spreading mosquitoes. \nThe Proposers Day will include overview presentations by DARPA personnel and potential government partners; an information session during which government personnel will respond to questions posed by participants; “lightning” talks (three minutes\, one slide) to allow potential proposers to highlight technical capabilities of interest and promote teaming; and short sidebars with DARPA personnel for discussion of any proprietary information that participants would not want to disclose in the other open sessions. \nAttendance at this event is not a requirement for submission of a proposal or selection for funding. DESCRIPTION:A ChABSA Technical Seminar will be held in Gaithersburg MD and by webcast on 15 May 2019 on Emerging Infectious Diseases of Wildlife: A Biosecurity Threat. \nSpeaker Bio \nDr. Karen Lips\, Professor of Biology at the University of Maryland is the presenter. She has a B.S. in Zoology from the University of South Florida\, and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Miami. She is a field ecologist who studies how global change affects biodiversity. She is interested in how the loss of biodiversity affects communities and ecosystems\, and how human activities contribute to the spread of disease and loss of biodiversity. Dr. Lips was a Jefferson Science Fellow at the Department of State\, where she worked in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs\, in the Office of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs\, and where she served as an Embassy Science Fellow in Colombia. Dr. Lips is a Research Associate at the US Museum of Natural History\, an AAAS Leshner Leadership Public Engagement Fellow\, an AAAS Fellow\, an ESA Fellow\, and an Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellow. She was awarded the President’s Award of the Chicago Zoological Society\, a Bay and Paul Biodiversity Leadership Award\, the Sabin Amphibian Conservation Award in 2012\, and the inaugural UMD Impact Communicator Award. Dr. Lips is interested in increasing engagement on environmental issues\, promoting scientific leadership\, and fostering international scientific collaborations.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s annual observation of National Infant Immunization Week is April 27-May 4\, 2019. \nNIIW highlights the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases and to celebrate the achievements of immunization programs and their partners in promoting healthy communities. \nThis is the 25th anniversary of NIIW. Since 1994\, hundreds of communities across the United States have joined to celebrate the critical role vaccination plays in protecting our children\, communities\, and public health. \nSeveral important milestones in controlling vaccine-preventable diseases among infants worldwide worldwide have already been reached: \n\nVaccines have drastically reduced infant death and disability caused by preventable diseases in the U.S.\nThrough immunization\, we can now protect infants and children from 14 vaccine-preventable diseases before age two\nRoutine childhood immunization in one birth cohort prevents an estimated 381 million illnesses\, 24.5 million hospitalizations\, and 855\,000 early deaths over the course of their lifetimes\, at a net savings of $360 billion in direct costs and $1.65 trillion in total societal costs\nThe National Immunization Survey has consistently shown that childhood immunization rates for vaccines routinely recommended for children remain at or near record levels\n\nOne example of the seriousness of vaccine preventable diseases is an increase in measles cases and outbreaks in the United States in recent years. \nNIIW provides an opportunity to: \n\nHighlight the dangers of vaccine-preventable diseases\, especially to infants and young children\, and the importance and benefits of childhood immunization\nEducate parents and caregivers about the importance of vaccination in protecting their children from birth against vaccine-preventable diseases\nFocus attention on immunization achievements and celebrate the accomplishments made possible through successful collaboration\nStep up efforts to protect children against vaccine-preventable diseases and thereby give them a healthy start in life\nEncourage better communication between parents and healthcare professionals.\nRemind parents and caregivers of the importance of making and keeping needed immunization appointments.\nProvide help to parents and caregivers to locate a healthcare professional who participates in the Vaccines for Children’s program\, a federally funded program that provides vaccinations at no cost to children whose parents cannot afford to pay for them.\n\nNIIW is celebrated as part of World Immunization Week (WIW)\, an initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO). During WIW\, all six WHO regions\, including more than 180 Member States\, territories\, and areas\, will simultaneously promote immunization\, advance equity in the use of vaccines and universal access to vaccination services\, and enable cooperation on cross-border immunization activities.

Since 2002\, the PHEP cooperative agreement has provided assistance to public health departments across the nation. This helps health departments build and strengthen their abilities to effectively respond to a range of public health threats\, including infectious diseases\, natural disasters\, and biological\, chemical\, nuclear\, and radiological events. Preparedness activities funded by the PHEP cooperative agreement specifically targeted the development of emergency-ready public health departments that are flexible and adaptable. \nIn response to the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic\, CDC also helped communities through the Public Health Emergency Response grant to increase state and local preparedness and response capacity during the pandemic. The recipients included the 62 PHEP awardees.

DESCRIPTION:The ChABSA will host a technical seminar by Drs. Kristen Reifel and Brandon Swan on the biosafety concerns involved in cell sorting on March 12\, 2019 in Frederick\, Md. Remote participation is available via webcast. \nDr. Kristen M. Reifel is a Principal Investigator in the Genomics group at the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC). She is also a member of the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC) Biosafety Committee\, and recently selected as an ISAC Shared Resource Laboratory Emerging Leader. \nDr. Brandon K. Swan is a Principal Investigator in the Genomics group at NBACC. He received his PhD in Marine Science from the University of California\, Santa Barbara and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Single Cell Genomics Center located at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences\, the first user facility established for single cell genomic sequencing. \nRegistration for the event is required. \nThe Chesapeake Area Biological Safety Association (ChABSA)\, is an incorporated\, non-profit organization that is an affiliate of the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA). ChABSA was established in 1987 by local area members of ABSA with a similar interest in the safety of research using microorganisms and recombinant DNA.

DESCRIPTION:A public advisory committee meeting of the FDA’s Microbiology Devices Panel be held on March 8\, 2019 in Gaithersburg\, Maryland. \nThe committee will discuss and make recommendations regarding new or alternative approaches to the clinical study design and evaluation of devices detecting Human Papillomavirus (HPV) nucleic acid. \nTopics to be addressed at the meeting include clinical study design and comparator methods. Additionally\, the committee will discuss potential changes to the High Risk HPV device indications for use considering continually evolving cervical cancer screening guidelines. The committee will provide expert feedback regarding the benefits and risks from the adoption of changes in each of the above topics and make recommendations for future High Risk HPV device evaluation strategies that are both scientifically rigorous and least burdensome. \nInterested persons may present data\, information\, or views\, orally or in writing\, on issues pending before the committee. Written submissions may be made to the contact person on or before March 1\, 2019. DESCRIPTION:Committee on Evidence – Based Practices for Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response \nThe National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine s soliciting information to help inform the deliberations of a consensus study committee sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. \nThe committee has been charged with conducting a comprehensive review and grading of the evidence for select public health emergency preparedness and response (PHEPR) practices. The committee’s report will provide recommendations on PHEPR practices that public health agencies should or should not adopt based on the evidence and will also identify future research needs to address gaps in evidence-based PHEPR practices. \nThe committee is issuing a call for reports to help enhance its comprehensive review. \nAnyone wishing to submit reports should email the committee at preparedness@nas.edu.
