SUMMARY:Fighting Ebola in DRC: New Tools and New Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Join Doctors Without Borders for a live webcast panel discussion on January 29 from 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM EST on efforts to contain the current Ebola epidemic in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). \nMSF teams are responding to the second largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded\, trying to halt the spread of this highly infectious\, deadly disease. The epicenter of the outbreak is in a conflict area in North Kivu province\, making a rapid response difficult. \nPanelists will explore the evolving medical approaches to fighting the Ebola virus\, the initiation of a randomized controlled trial testing treatment options\, and the unique ethical and logistical considerations this outbreak presents. \nAt the time of the event\, tune in to the webcast here. \n\nKarin Huster\, MSF Project Coordinator\, earned a BS in Nursing from the University of Washington in 2005 and her Master in Public Health degree from UW’s department of global health in 2013. After nine years working as a nurse in the intensive care unit of a large trauma center\, Karin now focuses on responding to humanitarian emergencies\, either in a clinical capacity\, as a field epidemiologist\, or field coordinator. She has also worked as an advisor to the emergency response branch of USAID. Most recently\, Karin returned from DRC where she helped launch MSF’s response to the Ebola outbreak and later returned to manage an MSF transit center for people with suspected cases of Ebola. In 2014\, she worked as part of the response in each of the three West African countries affected by the largest Ebola outbreak in history. She has also worked in Iraq\, Bangladesh\, Nigeria\, Haiti\, and Lebanon. \nDr. Brian D’Cruz\, MSF Physician\, has worked with MSF since 2011\, and recently returned from MSF’s Ebola intervention in Beni\, DRC. In 2014–2015\, Brian participated in MSF’s response to the West Africa Ebola outbreak in Guinea. He has also worked at MSF projects in Burundi\, Central African Republic\, Syria\, and Chad. \nDr. Tomas Jensen\, MSF Tropical Medicine Advisor\, is an infectious diseases physician currently based in New York as an advisor on tropical medicine and epidemics for MSF. He started working with MSF in 2006 as a field doctor and has worked in several countries including South Sudan\, Ethiopia\, Zimbabwe\, South Africa\, and Zambia. After finishing medical school in Denmark\, Tomas completed infectious diseases specialist training in Australia and a master’s degree in epidemiology with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. \nThe discussion will be moderated by Sandra Murillo\, MSF-USA Media Relations Director.

SUMMARY:Comments Due: Code of Conduct for Timely Sharing of Pathogen Genetic Sequence Data During Outbreak
DESCRIPTION:A key concern in recent outbreaks has been variable timelines between the start of an outbreak and the public availability of the first and subsequent genetic sequences. \nThe World Health Organization (WHO)\, upon consultation with many stakeholders and institutions working in the pathogen sequencing arena\, is proposing elements of a code of conduct for genetic sequencing data sharing in infectious disease outbreaks. \nThrough this code of conduct WHO seeks to enable rapid international sharing of sequence data\, allowing public health authorities\, product developers and researchers to collaborate more effectively from a position of mutual trust with respect for submitters’ rights to the information they provide. \nThe draft document is available for public comment until close of business on 28 January 2019. Comments may be submitted by individuals or organizations\, and will be considered for incorporation in WHO’s final Code of Conduct.

SUMMARY:DARPA Panacea Program - Accessing the Dark Proteome
DESCRIPTION:The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Biological Technologies Office is holding a Proposers Day to provide information on the structure and objectives of the Panacea program. \nThe event will be held on December 14\, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM EST at the Executive Conference Center (ECC; 4075 Wilson Blvd.\, Suite 300\, Arlington\, VA 22203). Advance registration is required. \nPanacea aims to integrate systems pharmacology and advanced medicinal chemistry approaches to expand the human drug target space for therapeutic interventions in the areas of acute management of pain and inflammation and the improvement of physiological endurance under oxygen-limited conditions or environments. Panacea will support the development and proof-of-concept demonstration of a new integrated platform for the rapid prediction\, synthesis\, and validation of pharmacological interventions. \nNew drug development for the Panacea program will be focused towards solving two critical problems facing DoD personnel: alleviating pain/inflammation without unwanted side effects and positively mitigating metabolic stress. \nDARPA seeks to bridge the gaps between the chemical space required to identify and produce novel pharmacological interventions and the complex biological space whose functions must be quantified in order to predict and validate the benefits of those interventions for these two desired indications. \nThe success of the Panacea program will represent a paradigm shift in the new drug discovery process and provide new technology that enables more rapid\, safe and effective therapeutic drug development for military and civilian health. \nSpecifically excluded from this effort is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice\, that requires genetic manipulation of the intended recipient\, or that relies on discovering novel pharmacodynamic space for known therapeutics to identify additional indications. \nAdditional details\, including registration instructions\, are available at https://go.usa.gov/xP6hD. Please address administrative questions to DARPA-SN-19-12@darpa.mil\, and refer to the Panacea Proposers Day (DARPA-SN-19-12) in all correspondence.

SUMMARY:U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (USAAW)
DESCRIPTION:U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week is November 12-18\, 2018. \nEach year in the United States\, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23\,000 people die as a direct result of these infections. Many more will die from complications by an antibiotic-resistant infection. \nJoin the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on November 12 – 18\, 2018 to observe U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week. Federal agencies\, health departments\, professional societies\, corporations\, and advocacy groups from across the nation will participate in this effort highlight the steps everyone can take to improve antibiotic prescribing and use. \nAntibiotics save lives and are critical tools for treating a number of common and more serious infections\, like those that can lead to sepsis. However\, at least 30% of the antibiotics in U.S. outpatient settings are prescribed unnecessarily. Any time antibiotics are used\, they can cause side effects and lead to antibiotic resistance\, one of the most urgent threats to the public’s health. \nImproving the way healthcare professionals prescribe antibiotics\, and the way we take antibiotics\, helps keep us healthy now\, helps fight antibiotic resistance\, and ensures that these lifesaving drugs will be available for future generations.
