DESCRIPTION:In this fifth meeting of the committee on Addressing Inaccurate and Misleading Information about Biological Threats through Scientific Collaboration and Communication\, the committee will meet in closed session to discuss the structure and content of the report\, and will establish a plan for the committee’s activities moving forward.\n\n\n\nAs part of this evaluation\, the committee will suggest a community engagement strategy for developing an international network of scientists to address claims about biological threats resulting from inaccurate and misleading information. Specifically\, this activity will: \n\nEvaluate existing online platforms and virtual communities for sharing information about and analyzing data from biological events including emerging outbreaks\, and current approaches for community-based review of scientific publications\, blog posts\, and other materials in this topical area.\nExplore key considerations for developing an international community or network of scientists to address the veracity of claims relating to biological threats. Considerations may include evaluation of the scientific qualifications of participants\, the accuracy and objectivity of analytic results\, transparency and integrity of analyses and peer review\, protection of scientists seeking to contribute to the community\, sustainability of the community\, and communication of scientific results.\nIncorporate knowledge from social and behavioral science fields in addressing network development and influence\, and community-based interactions in online settings.\nDevelop a community engagement strategy for establishing an international network of scientists to evaluate the credibility of reported biological threats. The strategy would incorporate lessons observed from existing platforms and approaches\, and include suggestions for organizational structures\, hosts and sustainability.\n\nThis project will involve the production of a short consensus report that will summarize the study findings and the suggested engagement strategy. SUMMARY:A Family Drama: The Sexual Politics of Smallpox Vaccination in the Spanish Empire
DESCRIPTION:The National Institutes of Health COVID-19 Scientific Interest Group will host a webcast entitled “A Family Drama: The Sexual Politics of Smallpox Vaccination in the Spanish Empire” on October 28\, 2021. \nIn 1804\, the Spanish Crown introduced the smallpox vaccine to its empire\, along with orders that vaccination be voluntary and that parents had a right to consent. Yet as families weighed the meaning of this decision\, doctors turned to the slave trade\, securing the vaccine and its future through bondage. \nAnalyzing this polemic and the politicization of preventative health\, my talk draws on collections of the NLM History of Medicine Division\, including institutional regulations and vaccination rosters from the Spanish Americas\, to trace the vaccine through the greater Caribbean and ask how and why colonial authorities selectively protected voluntary vaccination. \nForegrounding the methods by which the Spanish sought parental consent\, I examine the expectations about parenthood\, childrearing\, and the family that underscored their efforts\, demonstrating how long-standing investments in a patriarchal familial order were reanimated through the conservation and dissemination of the vaccine. DESCRIPTION:The Center for Global Development will host an online event on Allocating Scarce COVID-19 Vaccines Based on Epidemiological and Operational Considerations on 5 Nov 2021. \nSince the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic\, many institutes have been using epidemiological modelling to predict the spread of the novel coronavirus as well as estimate the impact of different control measures. \nWith the development of multiple vaccine candidates\, new questions have now arisen as to how policymakers can ensure cost-effective COVID-19 vaccine deployment and allocation that considers both operational constraints (e.g.\, in-country cold chain or human resources for healthcare capacity) and epidemiological characteristics (e.g.\, seroprevalence\, social mixing\, age-stratification\, comorbidities\, vaccine stretching etc). \nIn this event\, study groups will present and disseminate results that tackle a diverse range of research questions focusing on COVID19 vaccine deployment and allocation. SUMMARY:Animal Welfare Challenges in Research and Education on Wildlife\, Non-Model Animal Species and Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies will host a meeting 9-10 February 2022 to discuss the current understanding of animal welfare challenges in research on wildlife and biologically diverse vertebrate animal species.  \nResearch to advance understanding of the ecology and biology of wildlife species is more important than ever as the world confronts issues ranging from biodiversity loss to the emergence of zoonotic diseases. \nThis workshop will focus on issues associated with the unique welfare challenges of conducting research with biologically diverse vertebrates living in varied habitats\, for which guidance resources on wildlife research sometimes conflict and recommendations outlined in the current version of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (8th edition) can present challenges. \nThe workshop will include presentations and panel discussions to explore topics and questions\, such as: \n\nUnderstanding the growing needs of\, and building strategies for\, enhancing veterinary and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) expertise on the health and welfare of wildlife and biologically diverse vertebrate animal species;\nDiscuss resource options for improving the development and evaluation of IACUC protocols on research studies involving wildlife and biologically diverse vertebrate animal species interactions in captive and diverse natural environmental settings;\nDiscussing bioethics associated with fieldwork practices (e.g.\, bleeding\, euthanasia including thoracic compressions for small birds) and unique considerations for wildlife and biologically diverse vertebrate animal species; as well as welfare assessments amidst other considerations such as unique physiological\, behavioral\, environmental\, and/or husbandry needs of wildlife and biologically diverse vertebrate animal species;\nDiscussing federal\, state\, and local regulatory and management challenges associated with research on terrestrial and aquatic wildlife and biologically diverse vertebrate animal species;\nDiscussing opportunities for enhancing collaborations between IACUCs and researchers studying wildlife and biologically diverse vertebrate animal species\, including animal-environment interactions\, anthropogenic effects on environment and animal life\, and the relation between animal\, environmental\, and human health.\nDiscussing strategies\, synergies\, and collaborations within and among the wildlife and biologically diverse vertebrate animal research\, and biodiversity communities that could leverage national level research resources\, identify knowledge gaps\, and facilitate knowledge acquisition and sharing.\nReview the reasons and advantages for IACUC review of research using wildlife and biologically diverse vertebrate animal species\, including regulatory compliance\, public relations\, and institutional protection.\n\nPlease visit NASEM’s Animal Welfare Challenges in Research and Education on Wildlife\, Non-Model Animal Species and Biodiversity website for more information.

SUMMARY:National Biodefense Science Board Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The next public meeting of the National Biodefense Science Board (NBSB) will take place Monday\, 7 March 2022 from 1:30pm – 3:00pm ET via Zoom. \nJoin federal leaders\, National Biodefense Science Board members\, distinguished guests\, and other experts to discuss topics related to the public health supply chain and climate change.  NBSB will hear from the HHS Office of Climate Change and Health Equity and Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical\, Biological\, Radiological\, and Nuclear Defense (JPEO-CBRND) during the meeting. \nSubject matter experts from industry; academia; health systems; health consumer organizations; state\, local\, tribal\, and territorial public health; and emergency management agencies will also have an opportunity to provide comments to the NBSB on national priorities for biodefense and health security. Individual remarks will be limited to seven minutes each and the display of images and/or slides for public speakers will not be available. \nRequests to provide remarks to the NBSB during the public meeting must be sent to NBSB@hhs.gov by March 4\, 2022. In that request\, please provide the speaker’s name\, title\, and position with a brief summary of planned comments. DESCRIPTION:The National Academies’ Planning Committee on Building Public Trust in Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response (PHEPR) Science will hold a workshop on 29-30 March. \nWorkshop discussants and participants will collaboratively generate actionable strategies and approaches to (re)build and maintain trust across this continuum\, across stakeholders\, across levels of the system (federal\, state\, tribal\, territorial\, and local)\, and across emergency types. DESCRIPTION:The second meeting of the Committee on Use of Race\, Ethnicity\, and Ancestry as Population Descriptors in Genomics Research will be held on April 4 and April 7\, 2022. \nAs part of this workshop\, the committee request public comment on the current use of population descriptors such as race\, ethnicity\, ancestry\, etc. in genomics research and how the use of population descriptors could be improved upon in the future. \nThe agenda will be available on the event webpage. \nThe committee requests public comments as part of this workshop.
