SUMMARY:Deterring Russia's Biological\, Chemical and Nuclear Threat
DESCRIPTION:Biological\, Chemical\, and Nuclear Weapons: Can the West deter Russia from using them? \nThe National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP) will the event 4 April 2022 from 1:00 – 2:00 Eastern. \nOn February 27 President Vladimir Putin ordered Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces to be put on high alert\, sending shockwaves through Europe and the international community. As the conflict has drawn on longer than anticipated\, U.S. intelligence officials have warned of Putin’s “back against the wall” escalations. More recently\, on March 11th\, Russian propaganda outlets accused the U.S. of funding and harboring biological weapons facilities in Ukraine. Although these claims are false\, the Kremlin’s misinformation campaign has signaled to Russia-watchers and intelligence officials that Putin is fabricating information and messaging to justify his own intention to authorize chemical\, biological\, or a possible small tactical nuclear weapon. \nHow can the U.S.\, Europe Union\, and Allies brace for a possible Russian chemical or biological weapons attack in Ukraine? Are there lessons the U.S. has learned from the failure to respond to chemical weapons use in Syria in 2013? How might Western countries prevent\, mitigate\, or respond to such an attack? How could NATO\, the U.S.\, and Allies respond while trying to prevent further escalations? \nTo help answer these questions and many more\, please join the Honorable Andy Weber\, Senior Fellow at the Council on Strategic Risks’ and former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear\, Chemical and Biological Defense Programs\, and Mr. Ankit Panda\, Stanton Senior Fellow in the Nuclear Policy Program at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The program will be moderated by Ambassador (ret.) Susan M. Elliott\, President & CEO of the NCAFP. \nPlease visit the NCAFP’s Deterring Russia’s Biological\, Chemical and Nuclear Threat event page to register. \n

SUMMARY:Disease\, Diplomacy and Displacement: Syrian Refugees and the Politics of Health in Jordan
DESCRIPTION:Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) will host a lecture event on Disease\, Diplomacy and Displacement: Syrian Refugees and the Politics of Health in Jordan on 24 May 2022. \nThe event is open to the public through a virtual option. Those with an active Stanford ID may attend in person at Encina Hall. \nAbout the Speaker: \nSigrid Lupieri is a postdoctoral at the Center for International Security and Cooperation. Dr.Lupieri received her Ph.D. from the Center of Development Studies at the University of Cambridge. She also holds an MPhil in Modern European History from the University of Cambridge and an M.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University. Her primary research investigates how security concerns\, foreign policy agendas\, and diplomacy shape the priorities of refugee responses. In her current book project\, based on the case study of the Syrian refugee crisis in the Middle East\, she finds that security and diplomatic interests have wide-ranging effects on humanitarian health spending\, including a disproportionate focus on infectious diseases and the inequitable distribution of resources. In other research\, Dr. Lupieri explores the impact of refugee movements on the healthcare systems of host countries\, and the intended and unintended effects of international aid on refugee welfare. Outside of academia\, she has worked for several years as a journalist in Armenia\, Georgia\, and Germany\, and as a UN officer in New York and New Delhi. the Senior Director and Lead Scientist\, Global Biological Policy and Programs at NTI. \nPlease visit CISAC’s Disease\, Diplomacy and Displacement: Syrian Refugees and the Politics of Health in Jordan event listing to register.

SUMMARY:Fungal Disease Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:Fungal Disease Awareness Week is September 19–23\, 2022. CDC and partners have organized this week to highlight the importance of antifungal stewardship\, reducing resistance to antifungal drugs\, and recognizing serious fungal diseases early enough in the course of a patient’s illness to provide lifesaving treatment. \nSome fungal diseases go undiagnosed\, leading to serious illness and death. Increased awareness about fungal diseases is one of the most important ways we can improve early recognition and reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment. A key clue to when a sick person may have a fungal disease is that he or she is being treated with medicine for another type of infection but does not get better. \nWe encourage healthcare providers and patients to “Think Fungus” when symptoms of infection do not get better with treatment. The quicker doctors can diagnose the right illness\, the quicker patients can be treated the right way. \n \nIt’s important to consider fungal diseases in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic because the symptoms of some fungal diseases can be like those of COVID-19\, including  fever\, cough\, and shortness of breath. To provide appropriate care\, laboratory testing is necessary to tell if a person has a fungal infection or COVID-19. \nConfirming diagnosis of fungal infections can also help avoid unnecessary prescription of antifungals\, which could increase resistance to antifungal drugs. \nAntifungal drugs treat fungal infections by killing or stopping the growth of dangerous fungi in the body. Fungi can develop antimicrobial resistance\, when germs like bacteria and fungi develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them—that means the germs are not killed and continue to grow. Currently\, only a small number of antifungal drug types exist\, so resistance can severely limit treatment options.
