SUMMARY:The Long Journey to Eliminate the Deadly U.S. Chemical Weapons Stockpile
DESCRIPTION:The CWC Coalition will host a webinar entitled ‘The End of an Era: The Long Journey to Eliminate the Deadly U.S. Chemical Weapons Stockpile’ on 29 September 2023. \nWhen the United States ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in 1997\, it took on the legal obligation and the complex technical and engineering task of destroying its massive Cold War-era chemical weapons stockpile\, which consisted of some 31\,500 tons (63\,000\,000 pounds) of deadly chemical agents much of which were loaded in various forms of munitions. \nAfter years of delay\, all U.S. declared chemical weapons stockpiles were irreversibly and verifiably destroyed in July 2023\, two months ahead of the Sept. 2023 deadline set by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). \nThe event is a major milestone in disarmament: the United States was the last declared stockpile possessor state to complete its safe and permanent demilitarization of chemical weapons. \nOn Sept. 29\, this webinar will feature perspectives from a senior Defense Department official on the long path to successfully eliminate the U.S. chemical arsenal\, and the experiences of two local leaders who worked to reshape the government’s original plans for chemical weapons destruction to reduce the risks to local communities where the U.S. stockpiles were once stored. \nSpeakers: \n\nKingston Reif\, deputy assistant secretary of defense for threat reduction and arms control\nIrene Kornelly\, chair of the Colorado Citizens’ Advisory Commission\nCraig Williams\, co-chair of the Kentucky Citizens’ Advisory Commission\nDaryl Kimball\, executive director\, Arms Control Association\, moderating\n\nThis discussion will be on the record. The webinar is organized by the Arms Control Association and the Chemical Weapons Convention Coalition. \nRSVP via Zoom

SUMMARY:Tunneling Nanotubes and Intracellular Protrusions Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Tunneling Nanotubes and Intracellular Protrusions Workshop will be hosted 4 October 2023 by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). \nThis FASEB Catalyst Conference will be an exciting forum for discussing new discoveries in the field of tunneling nanotubes and related cell protrusions\, and their potential implications for human disease. \nIn the past decade\, there has been an increased focus on novel cellular extensions and their potential roles in facilitating human diseases\, including neurologic diseases\, viral infectious diseases\, cancer\, and others. One of the exciting new aspects of this field is improved characterization and understanding of the functions and potential mechanisms of tunneling nanotubes (TNTs). TNTs are actin-based filamentous protrusions that are structurally distinct from filopodia. They form and connect cells at long distance and serve as direct conduits for intercellular communication in a wide range of cell types in vitro and in vivo. \nResearchers are increasingly entering this field and investigating the role of TNTs in mediating cancer cell invasion and drug resistance\, cellular transfer of proteins\, RNA or organelles\, and intercellular spread of infectious agents\, such as viruses\, bacteria and prions. \nPlease visit FASEB’s Tunneling Nanotubes and Intercellular Protrusions Workshop site to register.

SUMMARY:Future Opportunities: Levers and Systems for Public-Private Partnerships to Distribute\, Dispense\, and Administer Medical Countermeasures
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies will host a workshop on “Future Opportunities: Levers and Systems for Public-Private Partnerships to Distribute\, Dispense\, and Administer Medical Countermeasures” on 2 November 2023.\n \nLessons learned from past health emergencies highlight the importance of public-private partnerships to facilitate and accelerate the research\, development\, and manufacturing of vaccines\, therapeutics\, and diagnostics (i.e.\, medical countermeasures). However\, less attention was given to public-private partnerships that enabled the successful implementation (distribution\, dispensing\, monitoring\, uptake\, and utilization) of medical countermeasures (MCMs)\, also known as the “last-mile.” \nThis is part of the Medical Countermeasures- Expanding Delivery and Increasing Uptake Through Public-Private Partnerships workshop series hosted by the National Academies Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Disasters and Emergencies. The series aims to examine lessons learned and future opportunities for public-private partnerships to facilitate the implementation of medical countermeasures to the public during a public health emergency. Speakers throughout the series will highlight various public-private partnership models deployed during recent health emergencies and discuss potential paths forward for public-private partnerships to facilitate successful implementation of medical countermeasures. \nVisit NASEM’s Medical Countermeasures- Expanding Delivery and Increasing Uptake Through Public-Private Partnerships workshop website to register.

SUMMARY:One Health Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:One Health Day is observed annually on 3 November to raise global awareness about the importance of One Health collaborations. \nThis global awareness campaign brings attention to the need for a One Health approach to address shared health threats at the human-animal-environment interface and promote best practices across all sectors. \nThe theme for this year is Act Together for One Health. \nZoonotic diseases are becoming a growing health threat worldwide\, with increasing reports of outbreaks in diverse regions. The risk of emerging and reemerging disease spillover and burden has been augmented by considerable interactions among animals\, humans\, and ecosystems. The One Health approach is critical to addressing public health threats by integrating environmental issues. Emerging diseases such as Ebola\, MERS-CoV\, and COVID-19\, underline the need for concerted action across sectors. \nIn October 2022\, the Quadripartite\, consisting of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)\, the World Health Organization (WHO)\, and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH\, formerly OIE)\, launched a new One Health Joint Plan of Action. This plan has the objective of establishing a comprehensive framework for enhancing our ability to collectively prevent\, predict\, detect\, and respond to health threats by integrating systems and building capacity. \nYou can celebrate One Health Day every day by committing to working with experts in other sectors to achieve better health outcomes for all. \n \nResources: \n\nOne Health – Basics\nOne Health Course Series\nOne Health High-Level Expert Panel (OHHLEP)\nTripartite Zoonosis Guide\nUnited Against Rabies\nStrengthening collaboration on One Health\nOne Health Initiative\nEnvironment\, Climate Change and Health\nHuman-Animal Interface Team\nInternational Health regulation\nNeglected Tropical Diseases\nNutrition and Food Safety\nSurveillance\, Prevention and Control of Antimicrobial Resistance\nA Compendium of Measures to Prevent Zoonotic Diseases Associated with Non-Traditional Pets\n\nSources: CDC\, UN Environment Programme\, ISID

SUMMARY:OECD High-Level Policy Forum: Better Policies for More Resilient Health Systems
DESCRIPTION:The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will host a Ministerial Meeting on Better Policies for More Resilient Health Systems on 23 January 2024 in Paris\, France and via virtual broadcast. \nAs the world emerges from the biggest public health emergency in more than a century\, it is clear that there are lessons to be learned. The COVID-19 crisis exposed significant weaknesses in health systems\, calling for urgent action to ensure that they more resilient to future shocks. At the same time\, global megatrends such as climate change\, demographic change and increased digitalisation will likely have significant implications for health and healthcare in the years to come. \nIn January 2024\, Health Ministers from OECD and partner countries will come together to discuss the legacy and lessons learned from the COVID-19 crisis\, the health policy challenges that lie ahead\, and the actions needed to address them. The meeting will be Chaired by Belgium\, with Australia\, Chile\, Germany\, Norway and Slovenia serving as Vice-Chairs. \nHighlighted agenda items include: \n\nBolstering public health: Healthy populations for more resilient health systems\nThe future of digital health after COVID-19\nThe future of pharmaceutical policy\n\n“Our health systems have continuously improved over recent decades\, both in terms of investment and outcomes. Many have worked tirelessly to make that happen. Nevertheless\, the COVID-19 pandemic was a sobering reminder: fundamental challenges on issues such as workforce\, prevention and health promotion\, mental health\, inequalities and the supply chain of medical goods continue to put pressure on our health systems\,” notes Frank Vandenbroucke\, Chair of the 2024 OECD Health Ministerial Meeting. “If we want to make our health systems more future-proof\, we must take these challenges seriously – especially in the context of rapid social\, technological and environmental change.” \nThe OECD High-Level Policy Forum on The Future of People-Centred Health Innovation will take place on 22 January 2024\, on the eve of the OECD Health Ministerial Meeting. The Forum will explore policies and priorities for adopting new innovations into health systems and is being organised by the OECD\, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Fund and the Health Foundation and in partnership with Financial Times Live. \nPlease visit the OECD Ministerial Meeting page for more information and to register.
