SUMMARY:Radiological and Nuclear Preparedness and Response Workshop
DESCRIPTION:NACCHO\, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other state and local partners\, is hosting a full day  radiological/nuclear preparedness and response workshop for about 70 attendances on 24 March 2024 in Cleveland\, Ohio. \nThis is a pre-conference workshop prior to NACCHO’s Preparedness Summit\, taking place 25-28 March 2024. The Preparedness Summit is a one-of-a-kind learning and networking opportunity for local health officials and their public health partners from all geographic regions of the nation to share perspectives and engage in dialogue on common key public health practice issues. \nThis interactive workshop’s first aim is to offer justification for why robust radiation planning and exercising are essential while also providing resources currently used by emergency and public health planners to bridge knowledge gaps and improve their existing radiation planning and exercising programs. The second aim of the workshop is to introduce and train public health preparedness planners to facilitate a new CDC tool called TEST (Training and Exercise Simulation Tool) which is a collaborative serious game that was developed to bridge the gap between discussion and operational exercises for Community Reception Centers (CRCs) using narrative-based problems to foster teamwork\, resource management and understanding of specific roles and responsibilities during a radiation emergency. \nPlease note that due to funding and space restrictions\, we may not be able to accommodate all requests. We will make every effort to include as many applicants as possible and will ensure a diversity of representation across the country. Your answers to the questions below will assist us in this process. \nInformation gained from this workshop will help inform future NACCHO communications plans and corresponding promotional activities that highlight resources of most need. \nPlease visit NACCHO’s Radiological and Nuclear Preparedness and Response Workshop for more information and to register to attend.

SUMMARY:BV-BRC Viral Sub-Species Classification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Bacterial and Viral Bioinformatics Resource Center (BV-BRC) along with the CDC\, NCBI\, and NIAID\, are hosting a hybrid workshop on viral sub-species classification 8-10 April 2024. \nA critical aspect of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic was to trace\, classify\, and understand the evolving virus lineages\, their phenotypic differences\, and their impact on diagnostics\, vaccines\, and therapeutics. \nClassification and tracing of sub-species level variation has also been similarly important in outbreaks of viruses such as influenza\, HIV\, and monkeypox\, and has informed public health risk assessment and communication strategies. \nTo prepare for the next\, inevitable outbreak of virus disease\, the workshop will review various classification schemes developed for SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses\, examination of the methods and tools developed for classification\, discussion of the utility and impact of classification schemes on the public health response\, and review of lessons learned from past and current outbreaks. \nWorkshop speakers include: \n\nAnderson\, Tavis\, U.S. Department of Agriculture\nBahl\, Justin\, University of Georgia\nDonato\, Celeste\, Monash University\, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute\nHatcher\, Eneida\, National Center for Biotechnology Information\nHinrichs\, Angie\, University of California Santa Cruz\nKorber\, Bette\, Los Alamos National Labs\nKuhn\, Jens\, NIH/NIAID Integrated Research Facility\nLe Mercier\, Philippe\, Swiss-Prot group\, Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics\nLefkowitz\, Elliot\, University of Alabama at Birmingham\nNeher\, Richard\, University of Basel\nNjau\, Emma Peter\, Sokoine University of Agriculture\nRachel Colquhoun\, University of Edinburgh\nRoemer\, Cornelius\, University of Basel\nRota\, Paul\, U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention\nSeto\, Don\, George Mason University\nSimmonds\, Peter\, University of Oxford\nSmith\, Derek J\, University of Cambridge\nWang\, Sean\, Minnesota Department of Health\nWarren\, Andrew\, University of Virginia\nZmasek\, Christian\, J.Craig Venter Institute\n\nThe outcome of the workshop will be to define best practices for establishing sub-species classification systems for these and other viruses that will be important in controlling future out breaks and potential pandemics. The valuable insights and best practices from this workshop will be widely disseminated. \nPlease visit the BV-BRC’s Viral Sub-Species Classification Workshop page for more information.

SUMMARY:NIST Rapid Microbial Testing Methods Consortium Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The NIST-led Rapid Microbial Testing Methods (RMTM) Consortium is hosting the 4th annual workshop 11-12 April 2024 to update the community on RMTM Consortium efforts and to work on Consortium deliverables. \nOver the course of two days\, independent working sessions will be hosted\, with Day 1 open to the public and Day 2 for Consortium members only. \nThis open\, virtual workshop is free of charge. All interested parties are invited to Day 1\, including advanced therapy producers\, rapid microbial testing assay/instrument developers\, and cell reference material producers. \nNew members are being accepted into the Consortium. \nPlease visit NIST’s 2024 NIST Rapid Microbial Testing Methods Consortium Workshop website for more information. \nABOUT THE RMTM \nThe NIST Rapid Microbial Testing Methods (RMTM) Consortium addresses the need for measurements and standards\, including reference materials\, to increase confidence in the use of rapid testing for microbial contaminants in regenerative medicine and advanced therapy products. \nThe safety and quality of advanced therapies\, including cell therapy\, gene therapy\, and tissue engineered products\, must be maintained prior to patient administration. The culture-based compendial methods currently used to assess product purity (specifically to ensure absence of microbial contamination) typically take weeks\, which is inadequate for patients in urgent need of life-saving therapies. These methods are also incompatible with products that have a limited shelf-life and cannot meet good manufacturing practices required in process control and release testing. Alternative rapid microbial testing methods are needed to ensure fit for purpose safety assessments for this broad class of advanced therapeutics. \nThe NIST RMTM Consortium brings together experts across the regenerative medicine field including stakeholders in industry\, academia and government to address this need.

SUMMARY:Chemical\, Biological\, Radiological\, Nuclear\, and Explosives (CBRNE) Sensing XXV
DESCRIPTION:SPIE’s Chemical\, Biological\, Radiological\, Nuclear\, and Explosives (CBRNE) Sensing XXV Conference will be held 22-25 April 2024 in National Harbor\, Maryland. \nThis conference provides an unprecedented forum for authors from government\, industry\, and academia to address a wide variety of CBRNE sensing issues\, technologies\, and advances in algorithms and signal process of threat related scenarios. \nThe sensing of CBRNE hazards is important to obtain “real-time” answers that allow actionable decisions to be made on-the-spot; to reduce the logistical burden by moving the analysis closer to the source of the sample; to rapidly screen materials to identify samples that need to be sent to a lab for additional analysis while minimizing the number of these samples; and to nondestructively analyze large\, valuable\, or immovable objects for which sampling is not possible. \nFurthermore\, defense communities around the world are increasingly interested in offloading forward decision making and analysis from soldiers to software\, which increases the need for more robust and accurate signal processing development to enable greater trust in detection outputs as the trend towards autonomous sensing continues. A strong reliance of CBRNE forensics is also required to enable attribution of these threats\, ideally in situ. In addition to protecting against battlefield CBRNE threats\, there is an increasing demand to protect borders and ports from the emergent threats of improvised explosive devices (IEDs)\, homemade explosives (HMEs)\, nuclear devices\, radiological dispersal devices\, and illicit narcotics. New and sophisticated radiation detection systems are also required for better protection of military personnel and civilians from radiological threats. \nAll of these sensor technologies are supported by advances in algorithms for sensor signal and data processing\, including sensor fusion\, machine learning/artificial intelligence. \nHighlighted topics include: \n\nBiothreat detection and identification using a carbon nanotube capture and containment array and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy\nRapid detection of bioaerosol by measuring single particle differential circular polarization scattering (CIDS)\nCondensation-based growth of nanoparticles for real-time inertial-based capture and biothreat sensing\nBiolayer interferometry as a biological detection platform\nDetection of microorganisms in drinking water using fluorescence spectroscopy\nOptical constants measurements of liquids for modeling aerosolized threats\nAerosol release tracking via optical barcodes: aerosol sensor testing ground truth\nAerosol mass spectrometer for aerosol characterization at the ambient aerosol test facility\nEvaluation of emerging sensors to detect chemical exposure for food protection\nImproving Raman stand-off distance for the detection of chemical warfare agents\n\nConference Committee Members include: \n\nJason A. Guicheteau\, DEVCOM Chemical Biological Ctr\nChristopher R. Howle\, Defence Science and Technology Lab\nTanya L. Myers\, Pacific Northwest National Lab\nChristopher C. Carter\, Johns Hopkins Univ. Applied Physics Lab.\, LLC\nAugustus W. Fountain\, Univ. of South Carolina\nTimothy J. Johnson\, Pacific Northwest National Lab\nLars Landström\, FOI-Swedish Defence Research Agency\nAaron LaPointe\, U.S. Army CCDC C5ISR Ctr.
