SUMMARY:Rapid Access to Products in Development (RAPID) Virtual Industry Day
DESCRIPTION:A Joint Industry Day for the Rapid Access to Products in Development (RAPID) program to be held virtually on 23 Feb 2024. \nThe Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical\, Biological\, Radiological\, and Nuclear Defense\, Enabling Biotechnologies (JPEO-CBRND-EB)\, develops\, manufactures and delivers safe and effective Medical Countermeasures (MCMs) for preparedness\, prevention\, protection\, response\, and recovery from CBRN threats. \nThe Rapid Access to Products in Development (RAPID) program is an integrated defense system composed of both physical MCM storage and fielding capabilities and a readily accessible information warehouse and sharing system (the RAPID Database). \nThe purpose of this Industry Day is to identify industry partners and capabilities to develop a RAPID Database capable of storing and organizing complex data and information related to CBRN MCMs such that it is intuitively accessible by a variety of end users during urgent planning and response situations. \nThe Database is intended to provide actionable information to assist CCMD-level decision makers when evaluating a RAPID MCM for potential administration to US warfighters; and JPEO- and CBDP-level decision makers when determining portfolio investment strategies or rapid response adjustments based on changing circumstances. \nThis Industry Day will include presentation by JPL EB as well as opportunities for industry partners to present their capabilities in one-on-one breakout sessions with representatives from the Government agencies. Industry partners will update Government stakeholders\, partners\, and end users on current efforts and capabilities. \nCompanies that wish to attend must register no later than 19 Feb 2024. More information is available at SAM.gov Notice ID W911SR-24-S-RAPID.

SUMMARY:An Enemy of the People: A Public Health Project
DESCRIPTION:LabX – a program of the National Academy of Sciences – in partnership with Cultural Programs of the NAS\, present An Enemy of the People\, featuring performances by acclaimed actors David Strathairn (Nomadland)\, Keith David (Nope)\, Brían F. O’Byrne (The Wonder)\, and Jay O. Sanders (True Detective) as well as public health leaders Anthony Fauci (Former Director\, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases)\, Francis Collins (Former Director\, National Institutes of Health)\, Keshia Pollack Porter (Chair\, Department of Health Policy and Management\, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health)\, Gloria Addo-Ayensu (Director of Health\, Fairfax County Health Department)\, Ruth Faden (Founder\, Johns Hopkins Institute of Bioethics)\, Victor Dzau (President\, National Academy of Medicine)\, Nancy Kass (Deputy Director of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Institute of Bioethics)\, Vivian Pinn (Senior Scientist Emerita at the NIH Fogarty International Center) and more! \nTogether they will perform dramatic readings of scenes from Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play An Enemy of the People to help frame powerful\, guided audience discussions aimed at generating connection\, understanding\, compassion\, moral repair\, and much-needed healing. \nAn Enemy of the People tells the story of a doctor who discovers the water supply in his small\, rural town has been poisoned by a tannery. Despite his efforts to convey the truth to the public\, the doctor fails to save his community from environmental disaster and is ultimately scapegoated for his whistleblowing. An Enemy of the People was first performed in Norway in 1882\, and yet it speaks to the present moment as if it were written for our times — to the corrosive influence of power and money in politics\, the distortions of the media\, and the many other challenges to public health in our culture today\, especially during times of crisis. \nJoin NAS for an evening of profound exploration\, thought-provoking dialogue\, and shared intellectual engagement. \nPresented by Theater of War Productions and LabX – A Program of the National Academy of Sciences in partnership with Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences. Adapted\, directed\, and facilitated by Bryan Doerries. \nPlease visit the National Academies’ An Enemy of the People: A Public Health Project to register to attend.

SUMMARY:Assessing the Burden and Potential Strategies to Address Antimicrobial Resistance
DESCRIPTION:A National Academies’ committee of experts will convene 4-5 March 2024 for a workshop to discuss the burden of antimicrobial resistance and strategies to address AMR challenges. \nParticipants can attend the workshop virtually and submit questions to speakers. The event will take place 12:00 PM – 4:15 PM ET each day. \nThere is broad recognition of the critical need to address the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). A global\, systematic analysis estimates that AMR infections lead to 1.27-4.95 million deaths per year\, and resistant bacterial infections are now a leading cause of neonatal mortality worldwide. While scientific and economic challenges have long hindered development of novel antimicrobials\, recent pull incentives have been proposed to support a sustainable market and investment in new antimicrobials. These recent discussions provide a timely opportunity to explore the current burden of AMR and discuss potential future policies in the context of new scientific innovations. \nHighlighted agenda topics include: \nMonitoring AMR in Plants\, Animals\, and the Environment \n\nModerator: Ramanan Laxminarayan\, One Health Trust\nEnvironmental and Wastewater Surveillance: Joakim Larsson\, University of Gothenburg\nAMR in Livestock and Food Systems (or Crops): Paul Plummer\, Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine\nRole of AMR in Cross-cutting Conferences – Experience from COP28: Haileyesus Getahun\, World Health Organization\n\nMaking Meaning from Metrics: What’s at Stake? \n\nModerator: Chris Braden\, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\nImpact of AMR – what’s not being captured: Dawn Sievert\, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\nModeling Prevention Strategies: Joseph Lewnard\, University of California\, Berkeley\n\nImpact of AMR Across Medical Practice \n\nModerator: Helen Boucher\, Tufts University\nSkilled Nursing Facilities: Susan Huang\, University of California\, Irvine\nSurgery: Shawn Rangel\, Boston Children’s Hospital\nOncology: John Wingard\, University of Flo\n\nStewardship \n\nOutpatient or Telemedicine Perspective: Kristin Ray\, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh\nAdvanced Diagnostics: Robin Patel\, Mayo Clinic\nPediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship (Hospital Perspective): Ritu Banerjee\, Vanderbilt University Medical Center\n\nAccess \n\nProtecting Pharmaceutical Supply Chains in LMICs: Anthony McDonnell\, Center for Global Development\nImproving Access and Balancing Stewardship in LMICs: Jennifer Cohn\, Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership\nSustainable Use of Available Medicines: Esmita Charani\, University of Cape Town\n\nInnovation \n\nSynthetic Biology and Artificial Intelligence: James Collins\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology\nConsiderations for Successful Public-Private Partnership Model in Antibiotic Development: Ken Duncan\, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\nSupporting New Antimicrobials in Clinical Use: Ramy Elshaboury\, Massachusetts General Hospital\n\nPlease visit NASEM’s Assessing the Burden and Potential Strategies to Address Antimicrobial Resistance: A Workshop for more information. \n

SUMMARY:CUGH 2024 - Consortium of Universities for Global Health
DESCRIPTION:The Consortium of Universities for Global Health will convene the CUGH 2024 Conference on 7 March 2024 in Los Angeles\, CA and via satellite sessions. \nFree and Open to the public Satellite Sessions begin at 8:00am on March 7\, 2024. Conference will begin at 4:30pm on March 7\, 2024. \nHighlighted agenda items include: \nDecolonizing the Pandemic Fund: Charting an Equitable Path Forward \nRobust and equitable financing for pandemic prevention\, preparedness\, response\, and reconstruction (PPPRR) is essential to prevent global health crises like COVID-19. The World Bank launched the Pandemic Fund to address this. Yet\, the Fund grapples with acquiring sufficient capital for PPPRR in low—middle— income countries and addressing policies that limit transparent and efficient fund allocation. For this panel\, we’ll gather health financing specialists\, including a Pandemic Fund board member from the Global South’s civil society. We’ll discuss how civil society can improve the Pandemic Fund’s transparency\, promote efficient fund distribution\, and enhance implementation effectiveness. In an era where donors demand fund accountability and recipient countries desire freedom from colonialist oversight mechanisms\, civil society’s role is crucial. This engagement is key to redefining and decolonizing global health financing accountability\, positioning it within the country with independent institutions. \nThe Rise of Anti-Science Disinformation and its Impact on Global Public Health \nThe rise of anti-science disinformation and its impact on global public health discusses the rise of targeted attacks against biomedical science and scientists\, especially in the areas of vaccinology and virology\, and how this will block global efforts at pandemic preparedness. How to overcome this through a combined approach of improved public health communications + directly combating sources of disinformation \nBuilding a Resilient Global Health Workforce: Training for the challenges ahead \nThe global health workforce faces unprecedented challenges\, from pandemics to evolving healthcare needs in a rapidly changing world. To address these challenges\, there is a pressing need to train a diverse and adaptable pool of health workers capable of meeting the demands of the future. This abstract introduces a panel which explores innovative approaches to prepare healthcare professionals for the complexities of modern healthcare delivery. Global health systems are strained by factors such as demographic shifts\, emerging diseases\, and health inequalities. To bridge these gaps\, transformative solutions are required. Training a diverse cadre of health workers is central to meeting this need and building resilience in health systems. This panel aims to spark a conversation on the vital role of training in building a resilient global health workforce that can effectively tackle the multifaceted challenges facing healthcare systems worldwide. \nStrengthening Global Health Security: Building bridges between civilians and the military \nThis panel aims to provide global health professionals at all levels with a comprehensive understanding of the pivotal role played by the defense and security sectors in Global Health Security (GHS). As health crises transcend borders and have impacts far beyond health\, it’s essential to grasp the nuanced contributions and considerations of these sectors within the evolving multilateralGHS framework. Our panelists will adeptly contextualize the capabilities and constraints of these sectors\, explore how civil-military collaboration in GHS is not merely reactionary but proactive\, and describe multifaceted strategies to ensure cohesive and effective multisectoral approaches to safeguarding global health. \n Leveraging Digital Learning in Health Emergencies for Health Equity \nIn the evolving landscape of health emergencies\, a system that rapidly equips frontline health workers with the necessary information and skills can significantly improve outcomes and save lives. Digital learning presents a unique opportunity to transcend geographic\, financial\, and political barriers to do just that. This panel discussion delves into the transformative potential of just-in-time digital learning in enhancing emergency preparedness and response to public health crises. Representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) will share insights into global initiatives and the importance of standardized\, yet adaptable\, digital learning modules. Project ECHO\, an evidence-based telementoring initiative that leverages videoconferencing to connect specialists with the broader health workforce in real-time discussion\, epitomizes this potential of adaptable digital platforms. ECHO experts\, including representatives from Seed Global Health\, University of Nebraska Medical Center\, and University of Botswana\, will share how they leveraged the case-based ECHO learning model to rapidly engage thousands of frontline health workers in collaborative problem solving during the 2023 Sudan conflict\, Ukraine war\, 2022 Ebola outbreak\, and COVID-19 pandemic. Converging the perspectives of both WHO and Project ECHO\, this panel aims to create dialogue on the present capabilities and future potential of digital learning in bolstering public health resilience globally. \n Training the Next Generation of Global Health Researchers \nThe Fogarty Global Health Fellows and Scholars Program\, established in 2004\, has provided support to over 1\,600 trainees from the United States and Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Seven consortia of U.S. academic institutions collaborate to offer these fellowships\, facilitating mentored research training in LMIC partner institutions. Research within the program spans diverse global health topics\, encompassing communicable diseases like HIV/AIDS\, non-communicable diseases\, mental health\, and more. In a 90-minute panel discussion\, program trainees will share insights into their research\, training experiences\, and career paths. The Fogarty International Center’s leadership will also reflect on the program’s impact and achievements. This discussion will unite distinguished alumni and current trainees of the NIH-Fogarty Global Health Program\, showcasing individuals with varying backgrounds\, including U.S. and international trainees\, MD and PhD fellows\, and representing different career stages. \nDiagnostic Testing and Imaging Services in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Addressing supply chain and policy bottlenecks for equitable access \nWithin the realm of modern medicine\, appropriate diagnostic capacity is indispensable in guiding treatment. Nonetheless\, diagnostics and imaging technology\, in contrast to pharmaceuticals and vaccinations\, are often relegated to the periphery. Nowhere is the problem more acute than in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite recent investments directed towards enhancing health diagnostics and imaging\, their latent potential to confer substantial benefits and improved patient outcomes remains unrealized. LMICs must confront challenging and often inequitable supply-chain practices and an international\, geopolitical landscape with competing political agendas. This panel session will directly address the myriad of issues preventing equitable access to quality diagnostic testing and imaging services in LMICs. \nClimate Change as a Threat to Global Health & Human Rights \nThe inequitable health threats of climate change pose sweeping implications for health-related human rights\, especially in low- and middle-income countries\, with environmental degradation challenging the most fundamental conditions for human life and the individual dignity and rights of vulnerable populations and future generations. However\, international negotiations to mitigate emissions — from the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its 1997 Kyoto Protocol to the 2015 Paris Agreement — have realized limited success in addressing the health hazards caused by the unfolding climate crisis. This session frames the rapidly evolving state of discourse on public health and human rights in climate change debates — examining global governance efforts\, academic research\, NGO advocacy\, and youth engagement. This session addresses the synergies between global health\, human rights\, and climate justice\, with a focus on understanding the global health threats of anthropogenic climate change and identifying the human rights advancements necessary to frame international law reforms for mitigation and adaptation. \nHost institutions for CUGH 2024 are the National Cancer Institute (NCI)\, UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences\, UW Department of Global Health\, and the USC Insitute on Inequalities in Global Health. \nPlease visit CUGH 2024 to register.

SUMMARY:Radiological and Nuclear Preparedness and Response Workshop
DESCRIPTION:NACCHO\, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other state and local partners\, is hosting a full day  radiological/nuclear preparedness and response workshop for about 70 attendances on 24 March 2024 in Cleveland\, Ohio. \nThis is a pre-conference workshop prior to NACCHO’s Preparedness Summit\, taking place 25-28 March 2024. The Preparedness Summit is a one-of-a-kind learning and networking opportunity for local health officials and their public health partners from all geographic regions of the nation to share perspectives and engage in dialogue on common key public health practice issues. \nThis interactive workshop’s first aim is to offer justification for why robust radiation planning and exercising are essential while also providing resources currently used by emergency and public health planners to bridge knowledge gaps and improve their existing radiation planning and exercising programs. The second aim of the workshop is to introduce and train public health preparedness planners to facilitate a new CDC tool called TEST (Training and Exercise Simulation Tool) which is a collaborative serious game that was developed to bridge the gap between discussion and operational exercises for Community Reception Centers (CRCs) using narrative-based problems to foster teamwork\, resource management and understanding of specific roles and responsibilities during a radiation emergency. \nPlease note that due to funding and space restrictions\, we may not be able to accommodate all requests. We will make every effort to include as many applicants as possible and will ensure a diversity of representation across the country. Your answers to the questions below will assist us in this process. \nInformation gained from this workshop will help inform future NACCHO communications plans and corresponding promotional activities that highlight resources of most need. \nPlease visit NACCHO’s Radiological and Nuclear Preparedness and Response Workshop for more information and to register to attend.
