SUMMARY:U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (USAAW)
DESCRIPTION:U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week is November 12-18\, 2018. \nEach year in the United States\, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23\,000 people die as a direct result of these infections. Many more will die from complications by an antibiotic-resistant infection. \nJoin the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on November 12 – 18\, 2018 to observe U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week. Federal agencies\, health departments\, professional societies\, corporations\, and advocacy groups from across the nation will participate in this effort highlight the steps everyone can take to improve antibiotic prescribing and use. \nAntibiotics save lives and are critical tools for treating a number of common and more serious infections\, like those that can lead to sepsis. However\, at least 30% of the antibiotics in U.S. outpatient settings are prescribed unnecessarily. Any time antibiotics are used\, they can cause side effects and lead to antibiotic resistance\, one of the most urgent threats to the public’s health. \nImproving the way healthcare professionals prescribe antibiotics\, and the way we take antibiotics\, helps keep us healthy now\, helps fight antibiotic resistance\, and ensures that these lifesaving drugs will be available for future generations.

SUMMARY:Technologies for Responding to Pandemics
DESCRIPTION:DARPA program manager Col. Matthew Hepburn will discuss and demonstrate several novel technologies for responding to pandemics during a seminar event at Georgetown University on November 16\, 2018. \nFor sixty years\, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the Department of Defense has held to a singular and enduring mission: to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security. Central to that mission is ensuring health security for citizens of the United States and protecting the armed forces from biological threats. \nCo-sponsored by Georgetown’s Center for Global Health Science and Security and the Global Health Initiative\, this event is part of a series of speakers addressing critical issues in global health in an effort to promote greater dialogue regarding pandemic preparedness. \nPrior to joining DARPA in 2013\, Col. Hepburn served as the Director of Medical Preparedness on the White House National Security Staff. \nRegister for the event here.

SUMMARY:A Century After the 1918 Flu Pandemic: Why Are We Still Concerned Today?
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Monday\, November 26\, 2018\, in Washington\, DC\, for a momentous occasion reflecting on the 100th anniversary of the influenza pandemic of 1918. A panel discussion entitled “A Century After the 1918 Influenza Pandemic—Why Are We Still Concerned Today?” cohosted by the National Academy of Medicine\, with the Forum on Microbial Threats\, will be held from 2:00 – 5:00 PM\, with an exhibit highlighting infectious disease outbreaks and a cocktail reception to follow. \nOur distinguished panelists will establish why pandemic influenza continues to be a major societal concern\, as well as highlight the global progress and benefits of driving science\, public health\, global governance\, and cross-sectoral alliances for pandemic influenza preparedness. An agenda for the event can be found here. A free live webcast will be available. Use this page to register for the webcast as well as the in-person event.   \nThe discussions will allow the following 1.5-day workshop\, hosted by the Forum on Microbial Threats\, to focus on the identified priority areas of concern for pandemic influenza and other emerging infectious diseases. For more information on the November 27-28 workshop on “Readiness for Microbial Threats 2030: Exploring Lessons Learned Since the 1918 Influenza Pandemic\,” please visit the event page. Public registration for the workshop is now open!
