SUMMARY:COVID-19 Effects on the Food and Agricultural System
DESCRIPTION:The Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources (BANR) of the National Academies of Science\, Engineering\, and Medicine hosted a webinar on Friday\, June 19 from 10:00 – Noon EDT with a virtual panel discussion on COVID 19 effects on the food and agricultural system\, which has experienced severe stress from a combination of factors. Workers’ health has been placed at risk\, producers have lost markets\, and animals and crops have been sacrificed. Meanwhile\, food prices are on the rise and unemployed Americans have turned in greater numbers than ever to overstressed food banks. A panel of distinguished participants in the food and agricultural system offered perspectives on the impacts and how we can learn from them. \nInvited perspectives include: \n\nA.G. Kawamura\, Owner\, Orange County Produce\, and former Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (2003-2010)\nTom Vilsack\, President and CEO\, U.S. Dairy Export Council\, and former United States Secretary of Agriculture (2009 – 2017)\n\nThe session was moderated by BANR Chairman\, Chuck Rice (Kansas State University). Members of the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources lead with questions to the presenters\, and the public was able to type in questions to be asked by the moderator. \nVisit NASEM’s website to register.

SUMMARY:Biotechnology for Materiel and Defense Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Biotechnology for Material and Defense Symposium virtual event will be hosted by the National Defense Industrial Association on June 17\, 2020. \nRecent advances in Synthetic Biology\, Biotechnology\, and their supporting infrastructure—biodesign\, automation\, artificial intelligence\, and data analytics—are affording transformational impacts beyond traditional opportunity spaces to produce natural polymers and composites\, synthesize new molecules for coatings and resins\, and ‘grow’ structural materials such as leathers and foams. \nFuture capabilities such as biosensors and nano-structure material production are on the cusp of implementation. The far future promises the ability for in-situ production\, self-healing\, and more. This ability to harness nature’s processes to produce molecules and materials in a sustainable way has the potential to not only have a positive impact on the environment and domestic manufacturing but also radically change how we design\, build\, maintain\, and support our troops. \nPlease visit the NDIA’s Biotechnology for Material and Defense Symposium website for more information and to register. \n

SUMMARY:COVID-19\, Systemic Racism\, and the Responses of HBCUs: A Virtual Town Hall Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering and Medicine Board on Higher Education and Workforce will host a virtual town hall on Jun 29\, 2020 to discuss COVID-19\, Systemic Racism\, and the Responses of HBCUs. \nHistorically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are among the nation’s most vital and vibrant institutions\, serving the educational needs of hundreds of thousands of students\, advancing the full spectrum of human knowledge\, and invigorating the cultural\, social\, and economic horizons of the regions they serve. And today\, these universities are at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19\, researching treatments\, keeping their states and communities informed\, and treating patients at academic medical centers.  They are also at the forefront of the nation’s struggles against institutionalized discrimination\, systemic inequality\, and anti-Black racism that are being brought to bear every day in the forms of demonstrations and advocacy in most U.S. communities. \nHow have HBCUs responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and to the recent events surrounding the murder of George Floyd?  As HBCU presidents look toward resuming in-person classes in the fall\, what have they learned from the COVID-19 crisis\, how will their institutions evolve as a result\, and what might that mean for the future of HBCUs in America?  How will HBCUs adapt to the serious financial challenges likely to arise in states and the nation in the months ahead as a consequence of COVID-19? What are HBCU campus leaders doing in preparation for a stronger and higher-profile role in terms of advocacy and leadership in directly addressing anti-Black racism in this country? \nPlease join the presidents of three of the nation’s premier HBCUs as they discuss COVID-19 and issues of racial injustice. This event is hosted by the National Academies’ Board on Higher Education and Workforce and Issues in Science and Technology and sponsored by the Kresge Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense HBCU/MI Program. \nSpeakers include: \n\nMakola M. Abdullah\, President of Virginia State University\nMary Schmidt Campbell\, President of Spelman College\nC. Reynold Verret\, President of Xavier University of Louisiana\n\nModerated by Gilda Barabino\, President-elect of Olin College of Engineering \nPlease contact John Veras (jveras@nas.edu) for questions.
