SUMMARY:Reporting Science to Public & How 'Science' Adapts to the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:A virtual presentation on “Reporting Science to Public & How ‘Science’ Adapts to the Pandemic” will be held on May 4\, 2021 as part of the 2021 Demystifying Medicine Series. \nThe 2021 Demystifying Medicine Series\, which is jointly sponsored by FAES and NIH\, will begin January 12 and includes the presentation of patients\, pathology\, diagnosis and therapy in the context of major disease problems and current research. Primarily directed toward Ph.D. students\, clinicians and program managers\, the course is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their application to major human diseases. Each session includes clinical and basic science components presented by NIH staff and invitees. All students\, fellows and staff are welcome\, as well. \nAbout the Speakers \n~ Stephen Smith (Washington Post Health and Science Editor) \n~ Valda Vinson\, PhD (Science Editor) – Valda Vinson is Editor (Research) at Science. She came to the United States as a Fulbright scholar and after completing a Ph.D and post-doctoral studies\, spent 2 years as a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Western Cape. She started her career in publishing when she joined the Science staff in 1999. Since then\, she has handled research papers in the areas of structural biology\, biochemistry\, and biophysics as an Associate and Senior Editor. In 2013 Dr. Vinson became Deputy Editor\, overseeing research content in the areas of cellular and molecular biology and biomedicine\, and in 2018 was named Editor\, Research. As Editor she works with Life Science editors to attract and select exciting research papers and reviews\, while following standards that support transparency and reproducibility. She also works with others on the editorial management team on editorial policies at Science and is involved in initiatives that bring together stake-holders within the publishing industry to discuss policies. \nPlease visit the NIH Demystifying Medicine website for more information.

SUMMARY:Envisioning a Transformed Clinical Trials Enterprise for 2030 - Session 4
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies’ Forum on Drug Discovery\, Development\, and Translation will host a virtual public workshop on May 11\, 2021 as part of a web series forum of events to discuss critical policy for advancement of biopharmaceutical innovation nationally and globally. \nThis virtual public workshop will provide a venue for stakeholders to consider a transformed clinical trial enterprise for 2030. Workshop participants will consider lessons learned from progress and setbacks over the past 10 years\, since the previous workshop\, Envisioning a Transformed Clinical Trials Enterprise in the United States\, and\, looking forward\, discuss goals and key priorities for advancing a clinical trials enterprise that is more efficient\, effective\, person-centered\, inclusive\, and integrated into the health delivery system of 2030. \nThe event will consider ways the thoughtful and deliberate use of new technologies could improve the clinical trials enterprise and support goals outline in prior webinar sessions. \nBackground\nClinical trials research has changed dramatically over the last decade. The biological\, physical\, and digital spheres are merging; clinical research and health care are at a critical juncture; new approaches enable the collection of data in real-world settings; and new modalities\, such as digital health technologies and artificial intelligence applications\, are changing possibilities for the conduct of clinical research. \nA planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine will plan and conduct a virtual public workshop designed to consider a transformed clinical trial enterprise for 2030. Key priority challenges and opportunities framing the 2030 agenda are: \n\nDiversity and inclusion of clinical trial participants\nConvergence of clinical research and clinical practice\nClinical trial data sharing\nIncorporation of new technologies into drug research and development\nWorkforce and career development\nPublic engagement and partnership\nRegulatory Environment\nCultural and Financial Incentives\nPractical short- and long-term goals for improving the efficiency\, effectiveness\, person-centeredness\, inclusivity\, and integration with healthcare of the clinical trials enterprise.\n\nPlanning Committee\n\nSteven Galson (Co-Chair)\, Amgen\nEster Krofah (Co-Chair)\, FasterCures\, Milken Institute\nAmy Abernethy\, Office of the Comissioner\, FDA\nAnita LaFrance Allen\, University of Pennsylvania\nChristopher P. Austin\, National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences\, NIH\nHoward A. Burris\, Sarah Cannon\nLuther T. Clark\, Merck & Co.\, Inc.\nGiselle Corbie-Smith\, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\nM. Khair ElZarrad\, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research\, FDA\nJennifer Goldsack\, Digital Medicine Society\nRichard A. Moscicki\, PhRMA\nAmy Patterson\, National Heart\, Lung\, and Blood Institute\, NIH\nJoseph Scheeren\, Critical Path Institute\nAnantha Shekhar\, University of Pittsburgh\nPamela Tenaerts\, Clinical Trials Transformation Initiative\nChristopher Yoo\, Systems Oncology\n\nFor additional information on the workshop series\, please visit the project page.
