SUMMARY:INTERPOL Global Biosecurity Conference
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural INTERPOL Global Biosecurity Conference will be held 2-4 July 2024 in Lyon\, France. \nThe conference will bring together law enforcement and partner agencies\, biosecurity experts and academia from different regions and backgrounds to foster dialog\, discuss current and future biological threats\, good practices and challenges. \nThe overarching goal is to to define a set of recommendations based on the outcomes of each session that would support the law enforcement community’s efforts to strengthen biosecurity at the global level. \nINTERPOL invites biosecurity experts\, researchers and scholars to submit an abstract to join the selection procedure to potentially present your work during the conference. \nThis should be written on one of the subjects below: \n\nBiological threat landscape\nCritical infrastructure protection and targeted threats\nDual-use commodities and research in the fields of biotechnologies and life science\nLaw enforcement roles and interagency cooperation in response to biological incidents\nCapacity building efforts to prevent\, prepare and respond to biological threats and incidents\nOnline content impacting the bioterrorist threat\nTackling biological threats to animals and plants from a law enforcement perspective\nBiological threat actors\n\nAbstracts are currently due 8 March. Please visit the INTERPOL Global Biosecurity Conference website for the latest information.

SUMMARY:Accelerating the Use of Pathogen Genomics and Metagenomics in Public Health
DESCRIPTION:The NASEM Forum in Microbial Threats will host a public workshop 22-23 July 2024 on Accelerating the Use of Pathogen Genomics and Metagenomics in Public Health.   to examine cases where genomics technologies have been applied successfully to disease surveillance and response\, highlight key characteristics of these technologies’ impact\, and identify potential opportunities for broader adoption in public health. \nHigh-throughput and increasingly affordable genome sequencing technologies have enabled the use of pathogen genomics and metagenomics as powerful data-driven disease surveillance approaches. These epidemiological tools have been critical in addressing emerging outbreaks and evolving pathogens from foodborne infections to SARS-CoV-2. This workshop will examine opportunities to integrate the use of pathogen genomics tools and techniques more broadly into the public health system to improve the rapidity and effectiveness of surveillance and response to diseases. \nAgenda items include: \n\nCurrent State of Pathogen Genomics in the U.S. Public Health System\nApplications of Pathogen Genomics in Public Health – State Level\, National Level\nGenomic Surveillance for Antimicrobial Resistance\nGenomic Sequencing to Inform Therapeutic Usage\nPathogen Genomics for Outbreak Epidemiology\nApplications of Pathogen Genomics in H5N1 Outbreak\nCurrent State of Infrastructure and Interoperability of Pathogen Genomics Data in the U.S\nIntegration of Data Streams to Augment Genomic Data\nPHA4GE Data Standards System and Structure – Application in South Africa\nData Processing Structures and Determining the Value of Sequenced Data\nConsiderations for Sovereignty and Governance of Pathogen Genomics Data on an International Scale\nDemocratization Efforts and Integration of Alternate Data Systems\nApplications for New Pathogen Detection and Limitations of Genomics Data\nPathogen Genomics in the Future of Public Health\n\nRegister to attend online or in person here. \nSource: National Academies of Sciences

SUMMARY:Heritable Genetic Modification in Food Animals
DESCRIPTION:An ad hoc committee appointed by the National Academies to explore heritable genetic modifications of food animals will meet from 23-24 July 2024 to discuss Oversight and Food Safety Concerns Posed by Heritable Genetic Modification in Food Animals. \nThis committee will address methods for heritable genetic modifications and identify risks and health hazards to humans\, animals\, and the environment. Furthermore\, this study will identify challenges associated with long term effects of heritable genetic modifications and identification of study design challenges when researching heritable genetic modifications in food animals. Agenda topics include: \n\nRecent regulatory activities regarding HGM animals\nAllergenic potential of HGM animal food products\nScientific and legal aspects of proposed changes to Guidance for Industry\nMOU with FDA for coordinating oversight of HGM animals\nRisk assessment and demonstration of safety of foods from HGM animals\n\nThe public part of the workshop will take place from 8:15 AM- 12:15 PM Eastern. Register to participate via webcast here. Source: National Academies of Sciences
