SUMMARY:Virtual AMR Codeathon
DESCRIPTION:The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is joining forces with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to co-host a virtual codeathon\, Resistance is Futile: A codeathon to combat antimicrobial resistance\, which will take place September 23-27\, 2024. \nThis event is an opportunity to explore the National Database of Antibiotic Resistant Organisms (NDARO) and related AMR data with NCBI Pathogen Detection tools\, such as the Isolates\, MicroBIGG-E\, and Antibiotic Susceptibility Test (AST) Browsers to identify additional data that may be useful for your project.  \nDuring the week-long codeathon\, you will collaborate with your team to accomplish the following objectives:  \n\nIdentify loss-of-function genetic variations that contribute to AMR.\nFind and classify mobile genetic elements that contribute to AMR in draft genomes. Note: This work could integrate sequence data with epidemiological\, transmission\, and antibiotic sensitivity testing data to identify patterns and directions of co-migrating of AMR genes or plasmids.\nElucidate AMR biomarkers for historically hard-to-predict bacterial species (e.g.\, Acinetobacter\, Pseudomonas).\n\nLearn more at the NCBI’s Virtual AMR Codeathon website. Applications are due by 28 July.

SUMMARY:Assessing and Navigating Biosecurity Concerns and Benefits of Artificial Intelligence Use in the Life Sciences
DESCRIPTION:This is the 2nd information gathering meeting of the consensus study\, Assessing and Navigating Biosecurity Concerns and Benefits of Artificial Intelligence Use in the Life Sciences. The open session of this information gathering meeting will include briefings containing information relevant to study issues followed by a discussion with the committee. \nThe convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and life sciences is an emerging area of research and development with promising benefits and applications but may also have security implications. This committee will consider the ways in which AI-enabled biological design tools and biological data sets for training AI can increase and mitigate biosecurity risks\, specifically on concerns of transmissible biological threats that could pose significant epidemic and pandemic-scale consequences. \nThe agenda includes a panel on high-performance computing in life sciences and biological data resources and infrastructure. \nThis meeting will be held over zoom. A recording of the open meeting will be available after it has ended.
