SUMMARY:What Does H5N1 Have to Do With the Price of Eggs?
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine \nAs highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) continues to disrupt animal health and the agricultural economy\, its ripple effects are being felt far beyond farms and veterinary clinics — even at the grocery store. Since its detection on U.S. poultry farms in 2022 and more recently in dairy cattle\, H5N1 has now spread across all 50 states\, raising urgent questions about animal-to-human transmission\, food supply chain vulnerabilities\, and the role of local and state responses. \nTo explore the connections between this ongoing outbreak and its broader implications\, join the National Academies for a live virtual discussion: “What Does H5N1 Have to Do With the Price of Eggs?”\nThis Healthy Exchange webinar will be held on June 3\, 2025\, from 1:00–2:30 PM ET and is designed for public health professionals\, biomedical researchers\, veterinarians\, agricultural economists\, and policymakers involved in health security and zoonotic disease response. \nFeatured Experts:\n\nDr. Susan VandeWoude – Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University. She will address wildlife reservoirs of H5N1 and outcomes in poultry\, cattle\, domestic cats\, and other species.\nDr. Kyle Shipman – Indiana State Veterinarian and Chief Administrative Officer of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health. He will discuss evidence-based management strategies for controlling disease spread in animal populations.\nDr. Jada Thompson – Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Arkansas. She will highlight the economic impact of H5N1 on livestock industries and consumer prices.\n\nThis interactive session will include a live Q&A\, giving attendees the opportunity to engage directly with these leading experts. A recording will be sent to all registrants and posted online following the event. \nPlease visit NASEM’s What Does H5N1 Have to Do With the Price of Eggs? event page for more information and to register to attend.

SUMMARY:DARPA PROtein SEquencing (PROSE) Industry Day
DESCRIPTION:On June 30\, 2025\, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will host the PROtein SEquencing (PROSE) Industry Day\, a hybrid event taking place both in-person at the DARPA Conference Center in Arlington\, VA\, and online via Microsoft Teams from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET. \nThe PROSE Industry Day is an opportunity for researchers\, technologists\, and potential proposers from industry\, academia\, and government to engage directly with the DARPA program team and learn more about this ambitious biodefense initiative. The event will include overview presentations\, lightning round talks\, poster and networking sessions\, and one-on-one breakout meetings with the Program Manager\, Dr. John Hoffman. \nProgram Objectives and Goals:\n\nIntroduce the vision and technical goals of the PROSE program.\nFacilitate teaming and collaboration among prospective proposers.\nDiscuss intellectual property and data rights strategies for commercialization and long-term government access.\nHighlight the role of protein sequencing technologies in addressing biological warfare threats\, synthetic biology risks\, and biodefense gaps.\nProvide guidance for submitting strong proposals and engaging with DARPA through resources like DARPAConnect.\n\nWho Should Attend:\nScientists\, engineers\, and innovators working in protein biochemistry\, molecular sensing\, microsystem integration\, bioinformatics\, synthetic biology\, and biodefense. Attendees may represent small businesses\, universities\, defense contractors\, biotech startups\, and international research organizations (pending compliance with security protocols). \nThis event is unclassified and closed to the general public and media. Registration is required and space is limited: up to 176 in-person and 300 virtual attendees. Registration closes at 5:00 p.m. ET on June 23\, 2025\, or when capacity is reached.
