SUMMARY:Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy Workshop 2: Scenario Discussions
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine (NASEM) will host the second installment of its ongoing workshop series\, Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy\, on July 16–17\, 2025. This multiday\, in-depth session will focus on a critical issue at the intersection of biotechnology\, biosecurity\, and global health: how to assess and mitigate risks while advancing innovation in the bioeconomy. \nThis workshop will engage scientists\, policymakers\, and health security professionals in discussions centered on a Crop Improvement Multi-Omics scenario\, exploring its dual-use potential and broader implications. Participants will evaluate how emerging bioeconomy-relevant research—particularly in multi-omics and biomanufacturing—might present opportunities for scientific and agricultural advancement\, while also identifying potential vulnerabilities that could be exploited for harmful purposes. \nObjectives of the Workshop Include: \n\nApplying and adapting existing dual-use risk assessment frameworks to bioeconomy R&D.\nEvaluating scientific benefits and potential misuse scenarios of bioeconomy-related technologies.\nIdentifying best practices and strategies for responsible innovation and oversight.\nFacilitating cross-disciplinary dialogue between early-career and experienced scientists\, biosecurity experts\, and global stakeholders.\n\nThis event is part of the broader Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy – A Workshop Series\, an initiative by NASEM to examine and update global approaches to mitigating dual-use risks amid rapid bioeconomic growth. The series brings together international experts to ensure that research and innovation continue to serve peaceful\, health-promoting goals in a rapidly evolving global landscape. \nFuture Workshops in the Series Include: \n\nWorkshop 3: Scenario Discussions | July 30–31\, 2025\nWorkshop 4: Scenario and Workshop Series Summary Discussion | August 6–7\, 2025\n\nAs of now\, registration details have not yet been posted. Interested participants are encouraged to check the event site regularly for updates and additional information about how to attend. \nTo learn more about Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy Workshop 2: Scenario Discussions\, please visit the official NASEM event page.

SUMMARY:Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy Workshop 3: Scenario Discussions
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine (NASEM) will host the third installment of its ongoing workshop series\, Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy\, on July 30–31\, 2025. This multiday event—Workshop 3: Scenario Discussions—will further explore how bioeconomy-related research intersects with global biosecurity concerns and the responsible advancement of biotechnology. \nBuilding on the framework established in earlier sessions\, this workshop will focus on two scenario-specific research domains: Non-Model Microbes and Human Health Multi-Omics. Participants will examine both the transformative potential and dual-use risks associated with these areas of innovation\, identifying strategies to responsibly manage emerging threats without stifling scientific progress. \nWorkshop Objectives Include: \n\nContinuing scenario-based exploration of bioeconomy-relevant technologies.\nIdentifying both beneficial outcomes and security risks of using non-model microbes and human health multi-omics in research and biomanufacturing.\nApplying and refining frameworks to mitigate dual-use potential while supporting innovation.\nFostering dialogue among scientists\, public health experts\, and global health security professionals.\n\nThis event is part of the broader Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy – A Workshop Series\, a global initiative by NASEM that convenes interdisciplinary experts to modernize guidance on dual-use risk assessment in the context of bioeconomic development. The series aims to balance innovation with international security by highlighting strategies for responsible research and biotechnological application. \nFinal Workshop in the Series: \n\nWorkshop 4: Scenario and Workshop Series Summary Discussion | August 6–7\, 2025\n\nRegistration information has not yet been released. Interested participants are encouraged to check the event site for the most up-to-date details. \nTo learn more about Biological Threats in the Age of the Bioeconomy Workshop 3: Scenario Discussions\, please visit the official NASEM event page.

SUMMARY:How Cities Can Use 7-1-7 to Strengthen Health Emergency Preparedness and Response
DESCRIPTION:Urban areas are on the front lines of public health emergencies. With their high population densities\, global connectedness\, and diverse health needs\, cities face unique challenges in detecting and responding to infectious disease outbreaks. On July 31\, 2025\, a virtual webinar hosted by Resolve to Save Lives will spotlight how two cities—Tucson\, Arizona (USA) and Recife\, Pernambuco (Brazil)—are using the 7-1-7 target to improve their local health emergency preparedness and response capabilities. The session is open to public health professionals\, epidemiologists\, and global health security stakeholders. \nWhat Is the 7-1-7 Target? \nThe 7-1-7 metric is an emerging global standard that tracks the speed of outbreak detection\, notification\, and response: \n\n7 days to detect a public health threat\,\n1 day to notify public health authorities\,\n7 days to mount an effective response.\n\nThis framework enables local and national health systems to assess performance\, identify bottlenecks\, and improve outbreak management in real time. \nCase Studies: Tucson and Recife \nThe webinar will feature in-depth case studies of how local health authorities in Tucson and Recife have implemented 7-1-7 to boost their responsiveness to public health threats: \n\nTucson\, Arizona: Pima County improved outbreak detection and response timeliness across a variety of settings\, including schools\, shelters\, and congregate care facilities. These lessons offer valuable insights for other urban jurisdictions looking to bolster their preparedness systems.\nRecife\, Brazil: During the city’s Carnaval celebrations—one of the world’s largest mass gatherings with 2.7 million attendees—7-1-7 was successfully piloted and later integrated into routine surveillance and outbreak response. Recife’s experience demonstrates how 7-1-7 can be scaled and institutionalized to improve local and national health security.\n\nWhat You’ll Learn \nParticipants in the webinar will: \n\nUnderstand how the 7-1-7 target can serve as a practical framework for urban preparedness planning.\nGain insights into real-world implementation experiences that sparked broader national-level health discussions.\nLearn how 7-1-7 can be used as a communication and engagement tool to align stakeholders and drive action.\n\nFeatured Speakers \n\nKate Donaldson\, Senior Director of Programs\, Big Cities Health Coalition (United States)\nTheresa Cullen\, Public Health Director\, Pima County Health Department\, Tucson\, Arizona (United States)\nBeatriz Matias da Silva\, Head of the Center for Strategic Information on Health Surveillance\, Recife (Brazil)\n\nThis event is particularly relevant for public health professionals\, epidemiologists\, city health planners\, and those working in emergency response and global health security. \nTo learn more or register\, visit the official event page. \n  \n
