SUMMARY:The Future of Malaria Research Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute will host the 7th Future of Malaria Research Symposium on November 12\, prior to the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene’s annual meeting. \nStudents\, postdoctoral researchers\, and early career scientists are encouraged to submit an abstract to be considered for a short or long talk. Dr. Etienne Bilgo\, Postdoctoral Fellow in Biomedical Sciences at the Institut de Recherche en Science de la Santé-IRSS/Centre Muraz will deliver the keynote address. Organized by postdocs and students\, the event will be held via Zoom and scientists at all career levels are encouraged to attend. \nHighlighted topics include: \n\nVectorCAM: a low cost hand held tool for automated\, rapid morphological identification of mosquito species\nIdentification of a novel determinant associated with quinine resistance in a Plasmodium falciparum genetic cross\nModeling the emergence of piperaquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Africa\nMitochondrial multidrug resistant transporter (MDR6) and its interaction with the ISC pathway in Plasmodium falciparum\nInappropriate sales of antimalarials in private-sector drug shops in rural Uganda\nA modular cloning system for high efficiency production of Plasmodium falciparum transfection vectors\nEvaluating the effects of sorbitol synchronization of clinical isolates of Plasmodium falciparum on their susceptibility to antimalarial compounds\nComparison of overnight to early evening malaria vector collections in indoor setting in Nchelenge District\, Zambia\nNovel kinases play an essential role during asexual proliferation of Plasmodium falciparum parasites”\nImpacts of a 4.3kb structural variant on gene expression and insecticide resistance phenotype in the malaria vector An. funestus s.s.\nFactors associated with asymptomatic recurrences due to Plasmodium vivax infection after radical cure treatment in communities in the Peruvian Amazon\nOctopi: a ready-to-deploy high-throughput imaging solution for malaria management and malaria research\nDistinct antibody responses to Plasmodium antigens reveal candidate biomarkers of the intensity and timing of past exposure to malaria\nAn ex vivo model of oxidatively stressed red blood cells demonstrates a role for exogenous amino acids in enhancing bystander red blood cell function and morphology in malaria\nSystems analysis shows a role of cytophilic antibodies in shaping innate tolerance to malaria\nA Male-Drive Female-Sterile (MDFS) system in Anopheles gambiae targeting doublesex\nAssessing the use of microRNAs for the diagnosis of severe falciparum malaria\nPrevalence of Plasmodium falciparum submicroscopic infection and pregnancy outcomes in Congolese women at delivery\nUsing transgenic fungi to kill malaria mosquitoes\nConditional knockdown of essential proteins in P. falciparum Midgut Stages\nA semi-field system for quantitative tracking of Anopheles gambiae olfactory preferences\nEstimating the impact of RTS\,S deployment in areas with seasonal malaria chemoprevention\nTrends in falciparum malaria prevalence\, parasite density and associated risk factors in Akure\, Southwestern Nigeria: An implication for malaria elimination\nAssessing off-target effects of CRISPR-Cas9 based gene drives in Anopheles gambiae\nHeritable cultivable bacteria associated to wild Anopheles gambiae s.l. in Burkina Faso for paratransgenic control perspectives of malaria\n\nPlease visit the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health 7th Future of Malaria Research Symposium website for more information.
