Website Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA)
Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking a biophysicist to lead a dynamic team of scientists, engineers, and modelers in the Health Effects and Risk Assessment (HERA) group.
As the lead biophysicist, you will serve as the Principal Investigator on an existing contract, and lead development of computational models to predict the risk of combined injury from concurrent exposure to blast, thermal, and radiation environments. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in physiology and systems biology, and experience with computational methods relevant to the prediction of health outcomes associated with radiation exposure. The individual should have a proven ability to collaborate with transdisciplinary teams, and the desire to develop a vision for a research program that supports the practical application of state-of-the-science models/methods. In this role, you can expect to play a significant part in ARA’s evolving programs designed to characterize biological effects from exposure to different types of energy sources.
As the Lead Biophysicist in HERA, you will:
• Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) and primary point of contact on our human survivability contract with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA)
• Lead a dynamic team of researchers in creating a vision for the human survivability program that supports the medical planning mission
• Contribute to research on predictive models of injury, working with transdisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions to complex problems
• Prepare technical reports, presentations, and other finished products, and collaborate with your team to ensure the quality and timeliness of deliverables
• Assist in business development, cultivate new opportunities, contribute to the development of proposals, and build strong relationships with current and potential customers
• Serve as a mentor to junior staff, helping them to develop the skills and expertise to further their own professional growth.
Requirements for the Lead Biophysicist position include:
- Bachelor’s degree in biophysics or closely related field with 10 -12 years of related experience or Masters with 5 years or more of related experience.
- Solid background in applied mathematics, including familiarity with computational modeling approaches relevant to the prediction of biological effects at different scales of biological organization
- Demonstrated experience in the following:
- Developing/applying dose-response functions to predict potential damage at the molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, or system level
- Researching mathematical models that estimate the risk of adverse effects on human tissues following exposure, and
- Providing “fit-for-purpose” solutions to complex risk problems that reflect the goals of the analysis.
- Working knowledge of
- human physiology and systems biology, and
- energy transfer fundamentals
- An active DoD security clearance, or the ability to earn a security clearance based on an evaluation of various factors (e.g., credit, felony convictions, and US Citizenship [not including green cards]).
Senior Biophysicist Desired Qualifications
- Doctorate in biophysics or closely related field with 1-3 years of related experience
- An active DoD security clearance
