The new Leibniz Lab for Pandemic Preparedness: One Health, One Future in Hamburg, Germany focuses on preparing for future pandemics by combining the transdisciplinary expertise of 41 Leibniz institutions. It works in four priority areas: the interaction of the environment, animals and humans in relation to the emergence and spread of pathogens, reduction of physical and mental disease burden, efficient pandemic management and improve the resilience of educational systems in pandemic situations.
Responding to pandemics requires a concerted effort from experts in various fields. This initiative leverages the hard lessons learned from the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic to adequately prepare for future pandemics.
“We want to ensure that society is better protected in future pandemics. This concerns the excess mortality of older citizens due to novel pathogens, but also the suffering of the young and youngest generation, who have been severely restricted in their development due to isolation,” Prof. Dr. Claudia Waskow

The Leibniz Lab is investigating, among other things, how alternative forms of animal husbandry can reduce the risk of transfer of potential pandemic pathogens from animals to humans, what immunity already exists against the population, and how the mechanisms of serious courses of illness.
This effort is funded with three million euros for three years.
