NASEM Committee on Toxicology Annual Meeting
September 27, 2021 @ 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm EDT
The National Acadamies’ Committee on Toxicology (COT) is a standing committee established in 1947 to provide independent, authoritative scientific advice to the U.S. military and other agencies on environmental and occupational health questions. Under a contract with the Department of Defense (DOD), COT provides advice on toxicological matters by evaluating hazards and health implications of specific product uses and recommending tolerable or emergency exposure guidance levels for chemicals under specific conditions.
COT meets at least once a year to review the progress of its committees addressing the tasks assigned by DOD. It also communicates through various other means with representatives of DOD and other agencies to keep abreast of developing requirements and problems, emerging issues, and newly initiated research and technology.
The committee will discuss whether there may be a need to update any Exposure Guideline Levels because of new toxicological data or understandings, or to address women’s greater military participation. The committee will overview of the state-of-the science on effects, levels at which they occur, animal models, mechanisms, and potential for complicating co-exposures. The presentation and discussion will lay the groundwork for potential future conversations with DOD about occupational limit setting.
