Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants are not appropriate programs for small business seeking funding for clinical trials, said a recent article published by the the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Instead, companies are encouraged to go through the NIAID investigator-initiated clinical trial planning and implementation process instead. Program contacts are available from the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases; Division of AIDS; and the Division of Allergy, Immunology and Transplantation for an initial discussion on the likelihood of support for the proposed clinical trial and best grant type given the current phase of the research.
A myriad of resources are available at the Investigator-Initiated Clinical Trial Resources page. Small businesses can still apply for an SBIR or STTR grant for the non-clinical trial parts of their research.
