The U.S. Department of Defense has recently awarded several notable contracts related to the field of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) defense or life science research of interest for potential applications in biodefense:
The Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense (JPEO-CBD), Biosurveillance Management Office has awarded a contract to Illumina, Inc. under a Next Generation Genomic Sequencing System initiative. The award value is $2,235,700.
The requirement is for thirteen sequencing systems and accessories. The contractor is required to deliver complete analytical systems which offer the capability to rapidly confirm threat identification, characterize novel threats, and monitor genetic variation in known pathogens. Manuals, training and a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty are also required.

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency intends to issue a sole source, firm-fixed-price contract with a base period and 4 options to MRI Company of El Paso, TX. For the base period and each of the 4 options, the contractor shall provide 1200 sets of personal protective equipment (PPE) single-use overgarments, hoods and footwear. Hoods and bootliners may be integrated into the suit design, but at a minimum must be designed to afford full protection to the wearer when worn as an ensemble. All part numbers used are Orex brand.
Non-ventilated protective clothing shall protect the wearer against particulate radioactive contamination, and items must comply with applicable test standards: puncture resistance; abrasion resistance; resistance to liquids, aerosols and particulates; radiation protection standard; fire resistance; tear resistance; tensile strength of fabric; barrier efficacy to dry aerosols.

Combat Medical Systems LLC, Fayetteville, N.C., has been awarded a maximum $36,396,530 fixed-price with economic-price-adjustment, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for various medical and surgical surge, re-supply, and sustainment materials. This contract is a competitive acquisition, and four offers were received. This is a one-year base contract with nine one-year option year periods. Location of performance is North Carolina with a Feb. 17, 2015 performance completion date. Using military services are Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and federal civilian agencies. Type of appropriation is fiscal 2014 war-stopper funds. The contracting activity is the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support, Philadelphia, Pa., (SPE2D0-14-D-0001).
