What Does H5N1 Have to Do With the Price of Eggs?

June 3 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm EDT

Virtual Event Virtual Event

Hosted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

As highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) continues to disrupt animal health and the agricultural economy, its ripple effects are being felt far beyond farms and veterinary clinics — even at the grocery store. Since its detection on U.S. poultry farms in 2022 and more recently in dairy cattle, H5N1 has now spread across all 50 states, raising urgent questions about animal-to-human transmission, food supply chain vulnerabilities, and the role of local and state responses.

To explore the connections between this ongoing outbreak and its broader implications, join the National Academies for a live virtual discussion: “What Does H5N1 Have to Do With the Price of Eggs?”
This Healthy Exchange webinar will be held on June 3, 2025, from 1:00–2:30 PM ET and is designed for public health professionals, biomedical researchers, veterinarians, agricultural economists, and policymakers involved in health security and zoonotic disease response.

Featured Experts:

  • Dr. Susan VandeWoude – Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University. She will address wildlife reservoirs of H5N1 and outcomes in poultry, cattle, domestic cats, and other species.
  • Dr. Kyle Shipman – Indiana State Veterinarian and Chief Administrative Officer of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health. He will discuss evidence-based management strategies for controlling disease spread in animal populations.
  • Dr. Jada Thompson – Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Arkansas. She will highlight the economic impact of H5N1 on livestock industries and consumer prices.

This interactive session will include a live Q&A, giving attendees the opportunity to engage directly with these leading experts. A recording will be sent to all registrants and posted online following the event.
