Book Event: To End a Plague: America’s Fight to Defeat AIDS in Africa – Emily Bass

CSIS Global Health Policy Center will host a virtual event featuring Emily Bass, veteran AIDS activist, historian and journalist, and author of  To End a Plague: America’s Fight to Defeat AIDS in Africa on Oct 13 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. EDT.

She’ll be joined in conversation by Jennifer Kates, Senior Vice President and Director of Global Health & HIV Policy at KFF; Chris Collins, President & CEO at Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and Ben Plumley, Senior Advisor at Bay Area Global Health Alliance & Host of A Shot In The Arm and newly launched Vax Up Podcast. Jeffrey L. Sturchio, CSIS Global Health Policy Center Senior Associate (Non-resident), will moderate the discussion.

To End a Plague chronicles the transnational activism, legislative deal-making and unprecedented political leadership that led to President George W. Bush’s 2003 announcement of a program known as the U. S. President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Today, PEPFAR is America’s most successful long-term pandemic-fighting program. With more than $85 billion invested, 18.2 million men, women, and children treated with antiretroviral therapy, and more than 50 million people provided HIV prevention services in recent years, it is also the largest commitment by any nation to address a single disease in history. At a time when the world—and the American government—is grappling with how to fund and fight the global Covid-19 pandemic, this panel will reflect on the lessons learned from PEPFAR, the crucial contributions by people living with HIV and their allies, and the crucial factors behind this program’s improbable and long-standing bipartisan support.
