Disease, Diplomacy and Displacement: Syrian Refugees and the Politics of Health in Jordan

Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) will host a lecture event on Disease, Diplomacy and Displacement: Syrian Refugees and the Politics of Health in Jordan on 24 May 2022.

The event is open to the public through a virtual option. Those with an active Stanford ID may attend in person at Encina Hall.

About the Speaker:

Sigrid Lupieri is a postdoctoral at the Center for International Security and Cooperation. Dr.Lupieri received her Ph.D. from the Center of Development Studies at the University of Cambridge. She also holds an MPhil in Modern European History from the University of Cambridge and an M.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University. Her primary research investigates how security concerns, foreign policy agendas, and diplomacy shape the priorities of refugee responses. In her current book project, based on the case study of the Syrian refugee crisis in the Middle East, she finds that security and diplomatic interests have wide-ranging effects on humanitarian health spending, including a disproportionate focus on infectious diseases and the inequitable distribution of resources. In other research, Dr. Lupieri explores the impact of refugee movements on the healthcare systems of host countries, and the intended and unintended effects of international aid on refugee welfare. Outside of academia, she has worked for several years as a journalist in Armenia, Georgia, and Germany, and as a UN officer in New York and New Delhi. the Senior Director and Lead Scientist, Global Biological Policy and Programs at NTI.
