FBI Biosecurity Workshop

The FBI WMD Directorate will host a 4-Hour Biosecurity Workshop on 23 Oct 2019 at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.

The event is designed to improve cooperation among law enforcement agencies and research institutions to mitigate potential biosecurity issues that may affect public health and safety.

The objectives are to:

1) Identify biosecurity roles and responsibilities of law enforcement agencies
2) Identify biosecurity roles and responsibilities of research institutions
3) Identify benefits and potential obstacles to improve cooperation among law enforcement agencies and research institutions regarding biosecurity
4) Identify methods of improving communications among biosecurity stakeholders

Biosecurity includes a range of topics that require the collaboration and coordination of a diverse set of stakeholders. The range of topics discussed in this workshop includes international and domestic terrorism, cyber security, protection of intellectual property/proprietary information, dual-use research, workplace violence, security challenges with the rapid advances in research and technology innovations, and insider-threat mitigation.

Relationships between the scientific and security communities must be built on trust and understanding in order to develop effective, sensible mitigation strategies, communication pathways, and policies to meet these challenges.

The audience for this course includes VP of Research (Institution Official), Responsible Officials, Biosafety Officials, Environmental health and safety officials, Primary Investigators/research directors, Laboratory Supervisors/ managers, Campus Police Department, State and Local Police Departments, Emergency Fire responders (to include HazMat), State/Local public health, Office of Emergency Management, Institution Human Resources Department, Institution Cyber/IT Department, Institution Office of General Counsel (Legal Department), and Public Information Officials.

You must be a US citizen or have prior approval to take this course. The FBI reserves the right to determine eligibility for this course. The scope, concept, and content of this course were developed by the FBI.
