Enhancing Biotechnology Innovation and Applications for National Security – First Meeting of Experts
February 8
The National Academies will convene a meeting of experts on 8 Feb 2024 to focus on ways to foster a research and development network in the United States that drives biotechnology innovation and applications.
This meeting will be held in a hybrid setting (Washington DC and online).
This is the first of a series of meetings of experts, organized under the auspices of the Standing Committee on Advances and National Security Implications of Transdisciplinary Biotechnology, which will bring together gatherings of cross-sector experts to discuss key topics at the intersection of national security and transdisciplinary biotechnology research and development.
The forthcoming second meeting of experts will focus on understanding future defense needs and ways to communicate those needs to the research community. The third meeting of experts will focus on understanding the regulatory processes and needs in the United States to enhance development of innovative biotechnologies for defense and subsequently, to transition defense-specific biotechnologies and services to other sectors.
Each meeting will highlight how more general concepts relate to specific biotechnologies using two illustrative examples:
- Use of artificial intelligence in biotechnology research and development
- Experimental/laboratory automation in biotechnology and development
The effort is sponsored by the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology.
