Alphavirus

Alphaviruses are a genus of mosquito-borne viruses in the Togaviridae family with global distribution and significant implications for public health and biodefense. These positive-sense, single-stranded RNA viruses include medically important pathogens such as Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Eastern (EEEV), Venezuelan (VEEV), and Western equine encephalitis viruses (WEEV). CHIKV typically causes debilitating fever and arthritis, while EEEV and VEEV are associated with severe—and often fatal—viral encephalitis.

Most alphaviruses lack licensed vaccines or antivirals, making them critical targets for medical countermeasure development. Their zoonotic nature, potential for outbreaks, and suitability for use as viral vectors in vaccines and gene therapy further elevate their relevance to global health security.
