Chikungunya
Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by chikungunya virus (CHIKV), an alphavirus that poses a growing public health concern across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and parts of Europe. Characterized by acute fever and debilitating joint pain, CHIKV infection can have prolonged effects, especially in older adults and infants. Its clinical presentation often overlaps with dengue and Zika, complicating diagnosis and surveillance. Over 110 countries have reported local transmission, largely driven by the spread of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.
Although two vaccines have recently received regulatory approvals in select countries, global access remains limited. There is no antiviral treatment, and clinical management is primarily supportive. WHO and global health agencies continue to assess vaccine rollout and vector control strategies under the Global Arbovirus Initiative.
